Oh sorry, looks like I got someone else here's meds this morning.
Didja know...the death toll from Puerto Rico attributed to Hurricane Maria is about as many (and maybe quite a few more than) died from 9-11?

I forget the name of that one that came right up the Potomac a few years ago. That was when we lived in the other house with all those really big trees right next to it. The sump pump did a pretty good job until the power went out. I spent the whole night fishing 5 gallon buckets of water out of the pit and dumping them out of the window that was right near it. That was the only time since we moved to the area 23 years ago that the power was out for more than a day. I think it was just a little less than 48 hours. Side note: a couple months ago one of those big trees fell and hit the neighbor's house, shed, camper.... and whatever else Sanford and Wife had piled out there that got caught in the splat.

I doubt we'll lose power for a long time, but I do think that it's never a bad idea to be prepared for things like this - make sure your outdoor things are secured or bought inside if possible, fill the car with gas, if you do have a generator, fire it up and make sure you have gas for it for a day or two, and get some food that you can eat without using a stove or microwave.
Common sense stuff we should do everyday, but never pay attention to. Peeps who live further east, where there's a real chance of being badly flooded should obviously do more.
I think the biggest concern is actually for people out and about in terms of flash floods and standing water - too many people underestimate the power of water until it's too late.

That was Isabel, I believe. Power was out here in King George for quite a while after that. Luckily, I was renting a house in “downtown” King George at the time, so I got power a lot sooner than most.

Not much you can do except hang on. We'll probably see a lot of rain and some wind. The ground is already soaked, so some trees might go down. I keep the truck packed with tow straps, jumper cables, and stuff you need, but when things like these happen, I throw in a chainsaw and some gas cans. I've pulled a lot of people out of ditches over the years, and you never know which end of the strap you will wind up on. We don't normally lose gas or water, but it does happen, so we keep the hot tub and spare bath tub filled for flushing water. Beer, of course.

They haven't changed that path in a couple of days now. Looks like this is gunna suck for the NC/SC coast. Only question now is how bad. Then they have it coming right up 95 as a TS over the weekend. Last time that happened there were a whole bunch of tornadoes coming off of it. I'll just put the loose stuff in the shed and see what happens. There's two almost full tanks of propane plus my camping gear if power goes out for cooking. I don't see water being an issue. So as long as I have beer and internet, it's not an extinction level event.

Hadn't thought of tow straps as part of a car emergency kit, but it's an excellent idea. We have tons of snack and of course Diet Coke. I'm thinking I may need to clear out part of the freezer and run the ice maker extra so I can use that ice for a cooler to keep the cans cold if needed One of our clients is on the coast of SC - they don't issue parking permits per se - they just give the landlord a card that the renters can use to park while they're on vacation. Since they're evacuating, they're issuing all the landlords a new permit that will allow them to go back on the island when there's an all-clear to check the property for damages. The woman who runs the parking office has already called once because they'e accidentally crashed the system - line for permits to go back when the all-clear is issued started 1.5hrs before the parking office opened this morning. Really thinking about them - the tourists will be gone, but all of the town workers have to stay as long as possible to supervise the evacuations.

It's almost comical reading the pages of some of these places out there along the coast, especially the ones right in the bullseye. "Are you going to be open Sunday?", "Is it too late to cancel my reservations?".... Fools Advice: If you put money into reservations on a coastal vacay a year in advance, pay the extra $200 for cancellation/storm insurance. Also, probably best to make other plans when a category 4 is heading right for your tiki bar.

I have an online friend who lives in Myrtle Beach. She has no money, and the big excitement in her life was last year, when she got a small grant that paid the deposit and first month's rent so she could leave section 8 housing and move to a trailer (we were all so happy - the apartment she lived in was awful and had bedbugs!). I'm hoping she can evacuate today - she couldn't go any earlier because there wasn't a mandatory evacuation, and Walmart wouldn't have excused the time off Oh and speaking of evacuations, don't do the time, if you can't hold your breath underwater www.thestate.com/news/state/south-carolina/article218179005.html

As usual, the poor folks will suffer even more hardships while the well-off will get their zero interest government loans to rebuild their oceanfront mansions. But hey, maybe there'll be FEMA trailers with the F for FORMALEHYDE! waiting on the other side for the down trodden.
I have to go to court tomorrow to see if I can work something out with the management company or if we're getting the boot regardless. Things are coming to a head again and with my luck they'll say we have to go this weekend. I don't think that's actually going to happen and if I absolutely had to, could get caught up with them to the point where everything we owe in back rent plus Sept's rent could be paid probably by the end of the week. The issue with that is it would leave me with ZERO dollars until I don't know when. Even a couple of days with ZERO dollars is a problem because other bills are due, past due, way past due, and there are other expenses like medicine, toilet paper, and gas to get to the couple of other jobs I have coming up. No, you never know what tomorrow holds but I see myself in the same place in Nov-Dec. Really need a place to go soon, where I can get caught up and regroup for a few months or longer, and use the money on catching up on those other bills. How I've managed for the last 5 years is a mystery but whatever it was isn't going to work for the next 5.

I am really sorry John. It truly, truly sucks that affordable housing is so low on the totem pole in our country, along with help for people with disabilities. I suspect that any quick 'affordable' fix would require moving somewhere where your wife would lose any freedom to move around easily Friend in White Oak had to move after 36 years - landlord died, and his widow couldn't keep up with his rental properties, so she had to sell most of them. Their house was in bad, bad shape (landlady said that they'd have to go as soon as she accepted a contract, because the house would most likely be condemned when the inspection was done - she was right), but it was a bitch of a time finding someplace new that they could afford. They were very, very lucky - the landlady said that she was sorry that her husband had never fixed anything for them, and that she knew they had always paid on time and never caused trouble, so she delayed putting the property on the market for 6 months to help them start looking, and when she did list it, she asked prospective buyers to give them enough time to properly pack and move. It was still beyond stressful. They're in England Run, but it's taking 3 incomes (hers, her husband's disability, and her daughters) to pay the rent

The latest map from NHC (the one I posted above updates itself on this page) is showing the same general bullseye for landfall but now taking a notably more westerly direction once inland. Possibly better news for us, much worse news for NC.

I went to the Weis around the corner a little while ago and they are already wiped out on a lot of stuff. The dog food, which is what I went for, was way low. I guess I'm not the only one willing to pay a few more bucks to avoid going to Walmart. I also needed distilled water for my cpap machine, and there were only about 12-15 gallons of that left. Other than that, no bottled water left in the store.

Shit! I didn't think of sending the small minx to Weis. Walmart, WalGreens and Giant were out of distilled water, but she did find some flashlights for my friend (no C batteries to be found anywhere, so I told her to get ones that would work on AA, and pick up batteries for those). She also got me 3 large bags of M&Ms, so we're ready Her friend moved here from TN - this is the first time she's been in a hurricane, and she (the friend) thought she could go shopping this evening....
