I think that states/localities and businesses are much more in-tuned to this than our federal government is. In the case of the NHL and MLB, a ton of their players are from outside of the US, so I'm sure that they are a lot more up-to-date, as players are communicating with family and friends back home.
And Disney is really nothing but a giant petri dish.
I don't think that there's something evil a-foot to be honest. I think that this administration (as usual) is totally incompetent, and doesn't have a fucking clue as to what to do. Which is beyond sad, as so many ordinary people have posted simple and helpful checklists (wash your hands/don't go near people if you're sick/make sure you have a 1 week supply of non-perishable food that you will actually eat/don't hoard shit). How hard would it be for Trump and Pence to just tweet or post some of this shit?
Seems like we're alternating between total panic (the world is ending!) or total ignorance (this is nothing - why I never wash my hands, and I've never been sick a day in ma life!)

State of Emergency! Coming to your country today! Get your TP and Lysol while you can!
OMFG! First off, I don't think this is needed, and will cause even more panic and anxiety.
Secondly, I wonder what powers he's going to invoke and whether Congress will lift a finger to try and impede him. (he has to actually say what powers he plans to use for the SOE).
What the hell happened to Pence BTW? He seems to have completely disappeared - perhaps he's observing that social distancing thing.

Maybe he got a call from DICK Cheney and was advised to report to an undisclosed location.
And don't worry, whatever Trump does will be well... fine... yup fine, because because he's not Obaaaaaaaamaaaaa!

Well, I have to give the asshole his due - he was able to read from his script better this time.
And Pence certainly acted presidential.
So, we're going to get more tests - a lot more tests - so many! And they're going to have drive-up testing at WM, because they so generously donated parts of their parking lots. And CVS is going to do the same Plus Google is going to put up a website so you can check to see if you need to be tested If you want a test, you'll get a test (as long as your doctor approves it that is) And you'll be waiting about 4 days for the results.
What can possibly go wrong?
And the generosity of these companies to do all of this for FREE overwhelms me. Oh wait. There was no mention of free, just that they were generous.
And Trump is suspending interest on federally-issued student loans for the duration, as well as buying up oil reserves while the prices are a bargain. Help for the little person at last!
We're totally fucked.

Still haven't read much about it. I heard Congress passed a huge bill with all sorts of plans, funds, etc. Trump is SO PROUD of the "team work" to get it put together. That's the extent of my info at least as far as the Empire is concerned.
I needed a couple of things (not for the emergency stockpile) on my way home and was in Giant on 17 yesterday. Giant is aptly named for that store by the way. Geezus it's HeYUGE. Anyway, I noticed on my way out to the gym that the parking lot at Lidl was 10 times as busy as usual which also meant that whatever they had on the shelves was already gone. So on the way back I decided to try that Giant because it's kind of set back off the road a ways and is not real visible from 17. There were more cars in the parking lot than usual for that day and time but nothing extraordinary. It was not really busy when I went in but by the time I left traffic was starting to pick up pretty good. The only thing I took notice of that they were completely wiped out of PUN INTENDED was toilet paper. I was able to get what I needed (half n half and salad mix) and even went ahead a got a few other things knowing that trying to get anywhere this weekend would be an exercise in futility.
Everyone there was calm and pleasant, even though one lady in line at the register was clearly about to melt into a puddle of goo, but people were smiling, polite, and mostly collected....And with that in mind, I couldn't help but think... in a couple of days or weeks those same people will be violently rioting, shooting, stabbing, and nunchucking each other over the last box of Triscuits.

Our Giant was so wiped clean that there weren't any damn bananas!
For those who frequent Giant, they usually have the equivalent of a small jungle's worth, with more in boxes stacked under the shelves. One of the line managers said they didn't even have any in the back. They were all joking about telling the truck drivers that on the next delivery they should just drop the pallets of TP and make a run for it while they could.
We all had a good laugh, but like you John, I wonder what will happen when the supply chain starts to break down. In a perfect world, we'd start to realize that we need everyone working together to have systems work. In the real world, I just worry that I can still get my meds each month.

I can see it now. Walmart puts in a policy limiting toilet paper to one package per paying customer per transaction. So, all of the packs of 30, 24, and 12 rolls are sold out and people are trying to get 6 or more 4 packs, you know, because "it's the same as one pack of 24!!!" and then Walmart changes it to say, 24 rolls per paying customer. Then the people buy all the packs of 24 MEGA rolls and the others are like "THAT'S 72 ROLLS!!!!!" and want to be able to buy the equivalent in single roll 4 packs...... So Walmart says, you know what? NO TOILET PAPER FOR YOU!
Yeah, we're fucked.

Mary Washington Hospital is shutting down to visitors - they said that if you're in labor they'll allow you to bring one person in with you, and two parents or guardians can stay with a sick child. Seems like most other hospitals and long-care facilities are doing the same.
A friend posted on FB yesterday that they were doing this, and the majority of responses (including her post) were along the lines of 'over my dead body!' Probably won't be theirs, but someone elses if they bring in germs that kill another person. And after listening to the announcement, I have a strong impression that those parents and support people are pretty much not going to be allowed to leave the hospital while the patient is there. I also suspect that if my spouse is in an accident and put on life support, that I'd be allowed to stay in his room, but not allowed to go back and forth - I'd have to agree to stay for the duration.
Lots of people saying that "they" (meaning the hospital) would have a fight on their hands if they were barred from entering. Of course "they" are the CNA's, nurses, security staff and doctors who are already beyond stressed. I really wanted to comment that they should just go hug their 24pack of TP and they'd feel better.

By the same token how many of those people went panic hoarding at the stores? Did they wipe out entire isles of staples to cover themselves and not think about the impact it would have on others not to have access to those things?
This is not end times. You wouldn't know that by the way some people are acting, and MWH isn't helping by their actions either.

I bet a lot of them did.
And MWH closing to visitors should be common sense, seeing as it's flu season too. Perhaps limiting visitors to no more than one person in the room at a time, having a list of 4 approved visitors and verifying that you've washed your hands and disinfected before entering the room should just be the norm. Of course, we're back to that requiring someone to be there to check, and that costs money.

I would be far more concerned with day care centers and nursing homes. But closing a hospital to visitors is over the top IMO, at least at this stage of the game. How costly and inconvenient would it be to put protective stuff at the entrance (like the latex or non latex gloves, and masks) and require people to put them on and wear them at all times while inside? Seems like a simple thing to me that keeps everyone's stress level way down. There are 360 million people in the US and we have (in real time) 2952 confirmed cases, 57 deaths. 41 cases in VA, 1 death. coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.htmlThe regular old garden variety of the flu? Source: www.health.com/condition/cold-flu-sinus/how-many-people-die-of-the-flu-every-year#:~:text=We all need to cool it a little bit, not get caught up with the hype, and take reasonable precautions. It would also go a long way to be responsible by not going to visit your great aunt at the nursing home if you haven't been feeling well, or dragging your 5 kids, all with runny noses, to daycare or really anywhere for that matter, where there are going to be other people. God knows when I'm the voice of calm, we are in some deep shit.

My husband was a carrier of airborne MRSA. This means that every time I went to visit, I had to wear gloves, mask and gown. The worst was the mask - I can’t stand breathing that stale air; nasty. But, in hospitals like UVA, with semi-private rooms, he was always guaranteed a private room. But those precautions were to prevent me from carrying the MRSA out, not bringing a virus in.

Even though I’m a part of the immune compromised group, I’ve never tested positively for MRSA. I’m not sure how I managed that! But, I’ve been semi-quarantining for a couple years now anyway. Not because of germs but because I’m antisocial. But it works.

Unfortunately, there isn't enough protective gear for all because we as a society have done extensive preparation for this scenario and have decided that the best offense is no offense! And from what I understand, most assisted living, nursing homes and group homes are closed to visitors at this time. And yeah, these precautions (in terms of hospitals, urgent care/ER, group homes and nursing facilities) should be in place during flu season as well. We all want to think that these places are cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis, but that pretty much happens in your dreams. I cannot remember ever being in a hospital where I was asked if I had washed my hands, or was told to before entering a patient's room. And that includes when my best friend was in ICU in grave condition on a ventilator with a diagnosis of hour to hour! OTOH, the nursing home my MIL was in always had a 'flu alert' that started in October and ran through Spring. You could come and visit, but you were advised to call first, to make sure they weren't on a lock down. Her floor usually got locked down at least one week a year because someone had a positive flu test and they were taking precautions to prevent anything from spreading.

Oh and Trump just put out an announcement to states that they're pretty much on their own in terms of getting things like ventilators or respirators.
If this does spread, the people I worry about the most are the ones in the rural areas. A lot of rural hospitals have shut down, and a lot of the ones remaining are operating on a shoestring, so they aren't going to be at the top of the list to get any type of supplies. I've been reading a lot of stories about rural healthcare since the orange one was elected, and it's pretty scary stuff in terms of availability. Doesn't matter if you have the Cadillac of insurance, if the closest doctor is 2 hours away and you're having a heart attack.
