From every angle:
Almost universally accepted at this point that Russia is going to invade Ukraine. If you watch, listen, or read all the hoopla about it, the war has already started sans a couple of the minute details.
Along with their obvious artificially enhanced appendages, it's always nice to see the nationalists abandon America first when there's not a nationalist/cult leader at the wheel.
It is incredibly unwise to announce your intentions and even more unwise to make threats. My dad used to call it letting your mouth write a check your ass can't cash. All of this shit going on in front of the camera is not what it going on out of it's view.
The last thing I expect to happen is a shooting war between the US and Russia. But Joe should make it the highest priority of his life to not fuck this up. If he's going to hit them over the head with sanctions, tell CON+GE=RESS to set them. Seriously. Watch what happens to the ones over there that love their little caves full of let's go brandon posters and see how many come out to support an actual function of their office.
Same if it were to be a war. Let them do it the old fashioned way. This is the hill we should pick to die on and I don't think anyone even realizes it.

Agreed - I think Moscow Mitch has the sense to realize that this is not good, but I worry about the idiots in Congress who will dither about and try to grandstand for the cameras.
And we all know that Trumpy Bear will be out front and center trying to appease his pal Vlad.
So yeah, Biden better be bringing his A game here.

Is anyone else worried that Putin may be using this Ukraine shit as a diversion? That maybe there’s something else going on? Or have I read too many spy novels?

I think he's using it as a test. How far can he go before the West is going to really respond?
So he knows that massing troops at the border is a no-go, but running war games not too far away will still fly (although with complaints). And that the West seemingly doesn't care about election influencing in Ukraine, just in their countries.
So, the threat is still real, and it's never good to take your eye off Vlad.

A "test" seriously understates it. It's an experiment. He's collecting the data coming in about the good ol' patriots in the usa paying attention or not while they grind out half of what you read on the internet and probably hear on the news. At this point, you really can't dismiss any possibility, including a Jedi mind spell on 51% of the wrold.

So the first move of the chess match has been made.... Russia (Putin) formally recognized a chunk of Ukraine as part of Russia. By sometime this evening I'm sure there'll be some sort of magic ball disguised as a sanction ordered by America (Biden) and by this time tomorrow Russia will have liberated an area that was mostly populated by Russians (now referred to as "speratists", and "rebels" by Ukraine (Zelensky) ) that already have control over that area.
I think we all have a good idea how this is going to go. The question is; Who will be banging their shoe this time?

Germany just cancelled the pipeline from Russia. Let’s see if that has any effect.

I don't think the pipeline cancellation is going to even slow Putin down.
He's already moving troops into the new 'separatist' areas of Ukraine that he is declaring are sovereign states - areas that already have Ukraine troops there to try and keep peace.
I'd say that Biden should do a national address explaining how grave this is, but I suspect the majority of Americans won't pay attention.
One of my friends had a really good analogy - she said to take a state like Texas, with a republican governor and legislature that dislikes the current administration. Now let's say that the President of Mexico tells them to say that they're leaving the rest of the states because Biden is a putz. The moment they say something, Mexico declares that they recognize the sovereign country of Texas - Go Texans! Buuuut.. Those Texans are in danger from the rest of the states and need help!
Now Mexico has moved their troops into Texas based only on what the governor and legislature have said - they want to leave the US. No one in office has made any type of statement since the original - 'Yeah, what if we leave?', and there's no clear indication that anyone in the area really wants to leave. Furthermore, US troops and bases are still operational there.
How is that NOT an invasion?
Hmmm - maybe Biden should use the above analogy but say that Mexico declares Texas a sovereign nation and a friend too - anyone who wants can immigrate there! Open the floodgates - who cares about the border patrol?
THAT will get republicans to pay some attention I bet....

And all joking aside - these recent developments are scaring the living crap out of me.
Forget a summit with Putin - Biden and other European leaders need to take very swift action to stop this, or we're all in deep shit.

It wasn't all that long ago that we were equally concerned with the potential perils of Russia annexing Crimea, which was portrayed pretty much the same as this current little occupation. Sanctions didn't do anything then and won't do anything now. This could turn into a nightmare scenario but I think there's more to it than meets the eye. What if while Putin keeps us distracted by taking little bites of Ukraine, TROC gets their doors beaten off the hinges and reminded what the ROC means for real like?
Would it be the first time two world powers, empires, .... emperors, made a deal with a murderous bride solely to act against a common enemy?

Minx, it would be like non-elected people in Texas said they want to secede, and Mexico recognizes them.
I'm sure Putin will stop once he has the Sudetenland.

John, that's what I'm afraid of.
Meanwhile we have Congressman Whitless sending emails saying this is all happening because Biden effed up the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Jesus can't weep any further.
