That neighborhood has been inundated with a group of teens/young men that started out burglarizing vehicles and homes. Now they’ve upgraded to setting cars on fire. They stole a car tonight (they stole the keys for it a couple days ago). They’ve been caught on security cameras so I’m hoping they’ll be identified-one of the images is really good.

I still say when they're caught, lock up their entire bloodline. People will start raising their kids better when they have to answer for them instead of making excuses/living in denial.

I'd stop short of the bloodline on one condition.
The perpetrators records should be looked at, both school and legal.
If the kid had been reported, and the parents took no interventions, then lock them up too.
There was a rash of break-ins years ago, and one of our cars had stuff stolen (we hadn't locked the car, so we bad). Police filed a report - I think they took an ipod. A few weeks later - arrest! Several kids in the neighborhood were roaming around committing petty crimes. Kid did confess to stealing the ipod but said his buddies dared him to.
Mom was horrified - she was active at the school, and while the kid had a small rep of trying to act tough, he had always toed the line. She made him plead guilty, and of course he was kicked out of things like sports and what not. Judge gave him community service and ordered him to repay the cost of everything he stole.
A year later (after we forgot about the entire thing), we got a surprise check from the sheriff's office for the ipod. Discreetly asked around, and mom and dad held his feet to the fire and made him work like a dog to earn the money to pay everyone back in full once he completed his community service.
He graduated from college last year with honors and is headed to law school.
Meanwhile, the kids who egged him on? Not sure about most of them, but the two ringleaders moved on to breaking and entering into houses and stealing guns. Finally chose the wrong house and got caught. Parents were stunned - how could our boys have done that???
So I say kid one had parents who knew what to do and did it.
Kids 2 & 3 also had parents who knew what to do, but didn't bother. So yeah, I'd toss their asses in jail as well.

There was a spate of burglaries from cars when I was in college (I lived at home and worked while in school). They took change and gum from my dad’s truck. But this stuff is a whole new level.
What is annoying is that when they’re caught there will be little punishment. So many sentences are reduced.
Sorry minx, I don’t think anyone should feel unsafe on their own property. So you weren’t in the wrong for not locking up.

Another update. Evidently, there was a standoff on Jett Street Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Sadly, I’ve learned that the guy that writes the Facebook postings for Stafford County Sheriff will no longer be doing it as they have recently hired a publicity person for that job. His write-ups were hilarious.

He did have some great write-ups for sure.
Glad they caught these bastards. But as you noted Pam, sentencing in this country is a joke anymore. People who should have been allowed house arrest or probation, languish in jail, while others who should have stayed in jail, are allowed to walk around on bail. No rhyme or reason anymore.

Just saw someone up on murder charges was released on bond. So there's a known murderer walking the streets compliments of some asshole judge that can't or won't apply the biggest tools in his shed to the worst offenders. Mind boggling.
BTW- I an obviously being hyperbolic when I say lock up the entire bloodline. But I'm dead serious about locking up the parents and any other enablers, especially when it comes to minors. It may not be their fault per se but it's their kid- their responsibility. I feel like some version of this will work a lot better than the status quo. Kids will know it's their parent/s/guardian's ass as well as theirs, and those parent/s/guardians know it's their ass if Chauncy is a fuck up and they didn't/don't take care of it from the beginning.

I think the parent's should be assigned some sentence along with the child.
So if the sentence is community service, parent should be responsible for making sure child gets there and completes it. Parent should also have to meet with the community service provider to discuss the work their child did and how well the performed it. Not up to snuff? Either they do more service until it is, or the kid finds a second community service opportunity.
And the parent should have to report back to the court too. So if junior doesn't do well with their community service, the parent should have to explain what steps they are taking to fix things.
Unfortunately, I do think many community service organizations just sign off on the service being completed - they don't want to deal with extra hassle.

We really have become isolated from each other, haven't we?
Too many kids either staying inside all day after school, or being shuttled to structured activities each day (and I do count after-school care as one of those), so they don't get exposed to their neighbors or people in different age groups. So they aren't forming the connections needed to maintain a community.
I look at my friend's kids and her grandkids. All very nice, and the grandkids aren't ruffians. But neither kid has any type of support system outside of mom, let alone a relationship with the neighbors - they couldn't even tell you anything about them. In contrast, my kids knew most of the neighbors by sight if nothing else, and I do think it helped keep them in line somewhat. It's one thing to vandalize the next door neighbor's yard when you don't know them, and completely different thing completely to vandalize Mr. Kevin's yard.
Not sure how we get that sense of community back though.

There was a crackhead they finally just caught in LBG that was setting trash cans on fire in and around the city. I don't know how many but it was double digits+. That city has some areas in it that you absolutely do not want to get lost in at night, and some that daylight won't help you either. Friends have said "a lot of drugs and dealers over there...". Thing is, the DDI was full of drugs and dealers. Maybe not "hard" drugs but still- Everyone seemed to conduct their affairs without lighting shit on fire, stealing cars, or shooting each other.

Don't be hatin! He is a hard-working ambitious young man! And he's a Job Creator - Lord knows what those two deputies would have been doing without his efforts to keep them employed and off the streets.
I say a True American Hero!
