I just read this in a comment on an opinion piece in the WAPO.
Those of us that are of a certain age may remember J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI's original "director for life". Hoover was both vilified and lionized during and after his lifetime, but no matter what you believed, politicians seemed to fear him. He allegedly used the powers of the FBI to serveil politicians, the power elite and those deemed "enemies" to compile dossiers on them all. Reputedly these files rendered him untouchable and he was able to do pretty much whatever he wanted from 1935 until they carried him out in 1972.
Fast forward to the present day. What if the Mar-a-Lago files that the current AG has uncovered and taken charge of are not TFG's money-making opportunities, but his dossiers, a la J. Edgar Hoover? It would help explain how TFG so easily and quickly brings his opponents and critics to heel. He certainly doesn't do it through his innate charm.
This scenario would might also explain the overwrought reactions from some GOP politicians. Are they terrified that their "dirt" files are now in the hands of the current AG?
