Friend is in the hospital with a urinary tract infection.
I'll skip the gory details of her multiple medical conditions here.
She is prone to serious UTIs. Nine weeks ago, she had an emergency stent put in due to kidney stones. Too large and of a type that can't be broken up with ultrasound, so they're going to have to go in and open her kidney to remove them.
Specialist at VCU is doing the surgery next month on the right kidney and then the left in October.
So she's been suffering with this freaking stent since June and will be stuck with it until next month. Meanwhile, this is the second time it's become infected.
First time was beginning of July. Week in the hospital on all sorts of different antibiotics. Ooops - turns out it was a fungal infection. Cleared up with a round of anti-fungal drugs.
She was re-admitted on Friday. Fever of 102.7, extreme right kidney pain. She tells them her history, and that she had a fungal infection in July.
Put on antibiotics - no change in condition. She starts asking doctor on Saturday if this is a fungal infection - too early to tell.
She tells the same doctor on Sunday that she had a fungal infection on her last admission. Well, we have to clear up the bacterial infection first. Plus anti-fungals have all sorts of side effects ya know.
She repeats that she knows all of this - July, remember?
Yesterday the doctor says that oops -not bacterial at all. No results on fungal tests, but she could order a round of anti-fungals. In the meantime, no discharge until she is fever-free for 24 hours.
Well, since the nurses only take vitals every 8 hours, how is she to know? If she's feeling warm or has the chills, call the nurse and they can check her temperature.
The urologist she sees up here basically said nothing they can do - not even call the surgeon in Richmond for a consult???
And doctors wonder why patients don't trust them....
BTW, she's still in there....
