Took the propane tank to ACE yesterday to get it filled. Guy comes out and does the refill thing for me.
Then off to the "curbside" pickup at Walmart (note: we can talk about the #800 gorilla in the room on another thread if necessary) and the kid comes out with all my shit on the cart and helps me load it up. Dude kinda lingered for like that extra second, enough to make me wonder if he was just checking to see if I was good or was I gonna bring out the money clip and spread the joy.
So I said thanks, jumped in the van, and headed on my way.
But it got me to thinking. If I were to had tipped him like some people do (although I have heard that Walmart does not allow their employees to accept tips) then by all rights I would have to had tipped the gas tank filler guy too.
And then there was the homeless person at the light coming out of Southpoint Lowes. I could have given him money for doing nothing. I'm sure this all has a point. Let me know if you figure out what it is.

WM dude might be looking for a new job soon if he's hoping for tips on the sly - all the big box stores have a policy against that and enforce it ruthlessly from what I've been told. So yeah, you can walk out with a shopping cart full of shit without paying, but if you take a $5 tip for loading an entire shopping cart that's been paid for into a customer's car, you're toast The sad thing is that everyone says they want people paid a decent wage - so servers should be making $15/hr. But if most restaurants did that, then people would howl that they shouldn't have to pay $20 for a plate of chicken tenders. Cause the truth is that the generous subsidize the cheap in that industry. So John tips 15%, I tip 18%. Between us, Pam is now making $12/hr. Then Billy-Bob comes in and tips nothing, and now she's back down to $11/hr. FWIW, we did tip the tree guy when he took down our last two problem trees. OTOH, it was only half of what I would have done. He went on a rant to the spouse about illegals taking jobs and not reporting their income to the IRS so they could avoid taxes. But he wanted us to pay in cash without a receipt - I'm sure he reported every dime to the IRS too. I did tell the spouse to give him something extra cause his son (who seemed like a decent dude) was with him to help out, and that while I didn't like the guy's views, I also didn't think he was living large off of the work he was doing for us. And yes, the only reason the tip came to mind was John. Because in the past I didn't tip for stuff like that. But if I tip my hairdresser, why wouldn't I tip the tree dude? He did a decent job after all.

My yard guy gets a little extra at the end of the season. And my mail lady - I have to tip her!

It's funny that the tree guy rants about illegals not paying taxes and he wanted a cash payment with no receipt. Why is it always the ones that go on and on about that kind of stuff and turn out to be the biggest hypocrites?
I used to leave a bottle of liqqa in the mailbox at Christmas for the mail man at out first house in Dale City. He was one of those that had to walk the mail up to every house. Our first rotty HATED him and tore up the window sills going batshit every day the mail came. So I figured just putting up with the fear of being eaten alive was worth a little holiday Hennessey.

Oh it pissed off the spouse big time - he asked the tree guy twice if it was okay to write a check (we did pay in cash, and were intending to) and with each payment installment he asked for a receipt.
Guy did a good job, but we won't use him again because of that.

I had a job at a church out in Culpeper that gave me cash for the whole job. Big job won't say how much but kinda hard to pay my vendors so it all went into my business account anyway.

Yeah, we didn't mind paying in cash, it was more the hypocrisy.
