This time at MSU. 3 dead, 5 in critical condition. Gunman shot himself - not counted in the 3.
Guy was 43 and should have been barred from owning a gun due to a 2019 weapons charge. He lived with his dad, and constantly denied he had a gun, even though his dad heard him shooting it out in the yard. Mom died of a stroke in 2020, and dad said that this guy never got over it. It sounds like dad thought his son was a danger to himself more than anyone else.
Dad confronted his son more than once, but never searched his room. And dad is distraught that his son did this.
Same shit different day.

Beautiful lives lost too soon. And their deaths will be a drop in the bucket at the altar of gun reform. I know this dude is different, but the majority of school shootings are done by kids who are under 18. Over 90% of the shooters obtain their weapon from a parent or other relative. So, let's put teeth into the existing laws and actually use them - mainly the ones on responsible gun storage and use. First the law should be split in two Level 1 - misdemeanor - fine of $3K or more. Gun stolen as a result of not being secured properly (such as you left it in your unlocked car dumbass), but gun is not used in any crime. The longer you wait to report the theft, the higher the fine. Level 2 - felony - gun stolen as a result of not being secured properly AND gun is used in a crime. Fine and automatic prison time. And I vote for automatic charges on these - no leeway by police or prosecutors to say that the gun owner has 'already suffered' at the thought of their gun being used in a crime. Too bad, so sad. Of course, there are exceptions - if you're a hunter and have your kid with you on Sunday to bag a deer, it's not irresponsible to let junior take a shot. Same with skeet or target shooting. BUT, if you want to allow your kid to shoot the gun, you must be physically present, and you are the one who assumes responsibility for their actions. It won't eliminate school shootings, but I truly wonder if it won't bring the count down - this article in the WaPo that analyzes shootings said that 86% of the shooters got their guns from an adult who left them unsecured. wapo.st/3Ebs3X7(I paid to remove the firewall so you don't have to!) I'm sure this is another thoughts and prayers. I wish it wouldn't be.
