So DeSantis has succeeded in stripping Disney's special tax district.
I honestly don't have a problem with the state saying that a corporation can't have their own little fiefdom. Till this whole thing came up, I didn't realize Disney did that.
Buuuuuuut. I 100% object to keeping the district and then having the governor appoint overseers. Either you're allowing the special district to stay and have it's own elected officials or you aren't.
And if you aren't, you can keep the special tax status - Disney pays a certain percentage that goes specifically towards that area of the county and not others - but you can't deny the people there proper representation.
And it pisses me off that this asshole is going to make this the heart of his campaign - "I took on 'Woke Disney' and won! Don't cross me!"

Too many dems are greatly underestimating him. They underestimate MTG too. She's a buffoon and an idiot, but she has the ear of the speaker of the house, and he owes her big time for his seat. So guess who's calling the shots right now?
People need to wake the fuck up - Biden is not going to do in 2024. He needs to start promoting someone young to be his successor. I don't think Kamala will be it either.

Was it ever a good idea to give a corporation governmental powers?

I know they won’t do it (can you imagine the logistics?) but Disney should leave FL. Just pack up and go.

Too bad there's not a blue state with a nice climate and enough land for them to start 'investing' there.

My first thought when all of this started was Disney should just pack and roll from Florida Man and his state. Probably would cost them their empire and even though they bring in gobs and gobs of revenue for the state, it would just try to recover it's losses via Federal relief. At the end of the day the two need each other but I assume Disney needs FL more than it needs Disney. Wasn't there talk of them looking at places in VA once upon a time? Was it Legoland or something else?

Disney's America. They wanted to build on the Manassas Battlefield. Trust ended up buying the land and preserving it.
And in order for Disney to really work, they need someplace with a temperate climate year round. No one wants to walk around an outdoor theme park in the middle of winter.
But since DeSantis stacked the new board with his cronies, his move might come back to haunt him. Cause fans of the Mouse don't want to hear that this board is doing shit to make it harder for them to visit. And Florida can't afford to have Disney decide to start expanding elsewhere.

I think Disney will stay put. There's an enormous investment already in place. The state may end up fucking the revenue by making people feel unwelcome, but fascists need victims, what are you gonna do?

Oh they ain't going anywhere. Despite the recent shitstorm, no one else will give them the deal Florida did.
But I can see them shifting a lot of corporate shit elsewhere and just leaving the park as their only business operation there. Doubt it will happen though. Florida doesn't tax shit, and in the end, it's all about money. The only reason Disney had to take a stand was due to pressure from employees and customers who are either part of the LGBTQ+ community or are allies.

Or they could take full advantage of Citizens United and put max effort into FL politics. I can't help but think the power and influence of that particular corporation would be equal to or greater than the plutocrats calling the plays for both parties. Turning FL blue would mean everything to democrats.

Wishful thinking. They still have to cater to the millions of rednecks who buy their visions hook, line and sinker.
It's funny - for the most part, after CU, most companies still openly give to both sides. One side may get a larger proportion, but they still give about what they gave prior.
So people have the illusion that nothing's changed. It would be great if we could somehow get an accounting from the man behind the curtain who does the accounting numbers for the PACs to see where corporate money REALLY goes.
And while I'm still high, what if people said that PACs had to advertise the same way that candidates do - This Ad has been approved and authorized on behalf of Candidate X by the Big Red PAC, which is Republican affiliated.

Yeah, well the guvnor and his cronies just passed a bill making it illegal to discuss gender or sexual orientation in public schools up through 12th grade. How will this affect sex ed? Oh it won't because it's all abstinence based, so no discussion of how babies are made - Just Say No!
It's very sad and repulsive. I'm on several FB groups for parents of kids who are in the LGBTQ+ community and the folks from Florida, Texas, Tennessee and Utah are simply terrified for their kids. And lots of trans kids in those states are being told by their doctors that they'll have to discontinue therapy. (when you're between 11-15 hormone therapy consists of puberty blockers to prevent the full onset of puberty. Gives kids and their parents some space before they start making a permanent transition.)
And while everyone's response is to just move, it's not always practical or feasible. Not everyone has the means to move, and a lot of people are tied to an area by family as well. If you moved to Florida to help out your aging parents, are you supposed to abandon them because of this? And for a lot of people the issue is housing and jobs - you have a place you can afford, but moving to a more expensive area means you lose that security. The solution of course is to make sure people in these situations can get to the polls and vote blue.

Oh it won't because it's all abstinence based, so no discussion of how babies are made - Just Say No! Can you believe that Trump is still considered the leading candidate for the GOP when you've got an actual far-right conservative as a possible challenger? Onto the point, I don't necessarily agree that it should be a "anything goes" when it comes to certain topics but also as a matter of common sense. while it's not appropriate to "teach" sex ed in K, it is certainly appropriate for some age group that I'm sure most reasonable people could agree upon. IIRC we were required to attend a class in 7th or 8th grade called "Health", in which plenty of kids got their first exposure to how reproduction works on the elementary and intermediate levels. I do not recall any demonstrations or lab partners being involved but plenty of red cheeks and giggles regardless. The information is only as good as the person with it, but at the end of the day I still think it it's going to be taught, that was close to being the right way. As for the other issues, I'd rather not have my kids being taught about the mechanics of something that we are pretending to fully understand ourselves. The areas of nature and biology rarely supports the premise currently submitted by psychologists. Therefore, I would support opt-in only teaching, or learning from other sources or resources, in the public school setting.

I think you can and should start in K.
Now we're not going to talk about the mechanics of sex there, but you can discuss consent and what to do when someone touches you without your permission. And reinforce that if someone does something you don't like (pulling your hair or giving you a friendly punch on the arm), that it doesn't mean they 'like' you if you tell them to not do it. And kids that age can learn the proper names for all their body parts. We need to eliminate the shame of a kid saying that someone touched them 'down there'. It's not a big deal to explain that some people have penises and some have vaginas. Again, not a full explanation on how both work, just that they exist and these are their names.
Then lessons can work their way up from there.
I don't think we need to go in-depth for things like all of the different varieties of gender and sexual orientation, but it should be talked about in health classes. Again, in a direct matter-of-fact way. Some people are heterosexual - this means they attracted to people of the opposite gender as they are. Others are homosexual - this means they are attracted to people who are the same gender as they are. There are also other categories of sexuality, but these are the two main ones. It is believed that sexuality is assigned at birth.
Gender also comes in different forms. Cisgender people identify as the gender they were assigned at birth based on their genitals. Transgender people identify as the opposite gender. Non-binary people feel that they are neither one gender or the other. As with sexuality, there are other categories of gender.
Regardless of one's sexual identity or gender identity, all people need to be treated with respect - this means using their preferred name and the pronouns they would like to be identified by, along with treating them in the same manner that you would like to be treated.
So not long-winded or 'indoctrination'. Just a simple statement of facts. All sex ed should be that - a simple statement of facts.
Talking birth control? List each method (including abstinence) along with the effectiveness rate and what needs to be done. Abstinence - 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STD transmission. Both partners must abstain from having sex. The pill - 98% effective in preventing pregnancy - does not protect in any way against STD transmission. The female partner must take a pill every day in order for this to be effective. Condoms - 80% effective in preventing pregnancy - 100% effective against STD prevention. The male partner must wear the condom before and during intercourse for this to be effective. And so on.
We're all too squeamish when discussing sex and anatomy. I wish that would change.

John, I have read that some Republicans are not happy with these social wars that Desantis is waging. Shit, he’s only had one local FL congressperson endorse him, whereas dipshit has gotten 3 or 4 of them. Desantis is more spite-driven than dipshit, which says a lot.

Sorry about that - they were under the birth control methods.
Oral - 100% prevents pregnancy if both partners participate - if it's only one, then the guy gets an STD.
One and done - if you only do it once, you can't get pregnant 50% effective.
The quick one - cum too fast and she can't get pregnant
And if we're discussing orientation: Don't think gay thoughts or be around anyone in the LGBTQ+ community or your baby will come out gay!

I'm sorry - I almost wet myself when DeSantis said "I think it's political" Well No Shit Sherlock!
And Pam, the legislator in question was a transwoman who told the esteemed assembly in Montana that if they passed legislation limiting the medical care that trans minors could receive they'd have blood on their hands from the kids who harmed or killed themselves. The snowflakes didn't want to hear that, so they banned her from speaking in the chambers.
And that is truly scary - Tennessee expelling members who disagree with them about gun control. Montana trying to expel a member who spoke in favor of trans rights. This is 100% how the Nazis took over. A total page from their playbook.
