My best friend’s daughter is here visiting her for her birthday (the 18th, along with my mom! What a coincidence!) from ND. She is due to leave for home today but has discovered she has Covid. Again. Her first bout was really bad, even with paxlovid. She was nearly hospitalized. She has canceled her flight and is moving from the hotel (she is being kicked out due to no vacancies) to my friend’s home. She sent her grandson to his father’s home in Richmond, meaning he will miss school until daughter can leave. Friend has been up all night, prepping room, ordering groceries, and fretting. She has to work today and expects to be super busy as it’s an anniversary sale or something at the antique barn place. I feel so awful for her. They have been spending lots of time together all week so she expects the whole extended family has been exposed. 😢😣

It looks like Covid has morphed into what scientists predicted - a very strong wicked respiratory infection like the flu. Unfortunately, it's also morphed like they expected it to and is a much more contagious form of the flu. I hope your friend and daughter recover quickly and that your friend only gets a mild case. My mom has had it twice as well - said that she felt like she was hit by a truck and stayed that way for about 4 days. For her the worst part was the total exhaustion. Getting out of bed to pee wore her out And yes, Covid can still be lethal - the flu is lethal too. So I'm not saying that we should drop all precautions or not take it seriously in case y'all are wondering!

She says they are confining themselves to separate rooms. Her younger daughter lives there as well. I hope she remains Covid free.

We have the dogs all week as the daughter, SIL, and gandbaby sail the seven seas. well, one sea. Cruise. I. can't. even. but whatever they're grown and can do what they want. Told them I'll drop the dogs off at their house when they return and we won't see them for at least a week. They are supposed to come over the Saturday before Easter but I'm going to take 3 covid tests (I have 4) for them to take before they come.
One of the servers at Hard Times said she was sick the other day. Based on her symptoms and non-symptoms it sounded a lot more like allergies to me, but had her keep distance and use hand sanitizer before touching anything she brought. I wasn't there very long.

I'm not worried about a cruise as much as I worry about people coming in sick who should be at home. Back to normal = back to no sick leave.
During the pandemic, places had to give you time off to get tested and to isolate and that time was supposed to be paid. Now we're back to unpaid sick leave, if you get it. Huge incentive to come in sick, since you won't get paid if you stay home.
I do get that giving folks paid sick leave when you only have one or two employees is very difficult, especially if you're barely scraping by. But there's really no excuse for other businesses not to do it. Should be mandatory for all employers. It can be made proportional to the number of hours you work per week - work 20 and get 5 days a year. Work 10 and get 2.5 for example. Work FT and get 10. And I'd support a tax incentive for businesses with under 15 employees so they can better afford it.

My guess is she got it on the plane. They are human Petri dishes. On a trip to a conference (business m not rescue) in LA, I had a stopover in St. Louis. It was one of those where you stay on the plane if you’re continuing on. So, I’m sitting there watching people board and this young lady comes down the aisle, sniffing and sneezing and I’m thinking, “Please, please don’t sit near me.” She sat right beside me. By the end of the conference, I was ill. And I had to tolerate a plane taking off and landing twice! That trip home was grueling. I was so miserable. And feverish. When we got into our ride home (it was one of those commuter services), my coworker asked if it was okay if he was dropped off first, in Colonial Beach. Before I could answer, he told the driver to take him home first because he wanted to see his kids before they went to bed. So, I had the extra joy of the ride from Reagan Airport to Colonial Beach and then back to King George.

Friend checked in with me very early this morning. She said the vomiting and diarrhea has finally passed and she’s now in the congestion stage. Her daughter said day 5 was the worst, so I guess she’s got that to look forward to.

Nope. I’m Novid. But I’m doing everything I can not to as I know if it doesn’t slowly kill me it will stay and I’ll suffer long Covid.

‘Novid’ - I approve of this term.
And like you John, I have questions. Got all of them, but I’m really wondering how they’re catching up with all the variants so quickly and reformulating the vaccine so fast.

I was told that is a term that some medical professionals use.
And I will take any vaccine that will limit my suffering. When I was scheduling this latest one, the website asked if I would like a shingles vaccine. Hell, no! Been there and suffered that! That was the most intense reaction I’ve ever had to any vaccination! But I’d do it again if it was warranted. My immune system is very flaky so I’ll take any help I can get.

The pharmacist said this will be the last vaccination for awhile. Definitely the last free one. I’m hoping us old geezers will have a 6 month regimen available to us but I may as well wish for unicorns, right?
