The ginormous rocket blew up on ignition. I had the site up but it never showed it, at least not to me. Maybe it’s my piss poor internet?

It looked like several motors didn't light up, and then it all went to shit 3 or 4 minutes downrange when it wouldn't separate.

Watched an interesting piece about it last night. They said it is believed that the launch pad (the concrete) was blown to literal pieces that damaged the engines and possibly some other components. Looked to me like it went death wobble in flight and wanted to RTB so they had to fry it.

I guess the thing was so heavy that getting it to lift off was a major achievement.
And lest we forget, NASA has had a ton of shit explode on the pad or shortly after takeoff too (unmanned things here). So it's to be expected that try 1 wouldn't go off without hitches.
We'd probably all feel better about this is Musk didn't own SpaceX.

NASA also built proper water-cooled pads that didn't disintegrate from rocket blast.

As the thing I was watching mentioned, "they won't have blast tunnels and water systems on Mars". Made sense to me but there's such a long way to go to get to that point it would've probably been better to figure that out later and get the thing into space first.
And yes Minx, NASA blew up many a loot truck full of gold in the effort. I don't care about Musk any more than the rest yet I think it's super awesome to have something to be excited about with space exploration again. The end of the shuttle program sucked the life out of NASA, or at least the average person's interest in it.

I agree, John. Test program, you protect your test infrastructure and work elsewise to figure out Mars.

You do have a point Bob - seems like SpaceX is reinventing the wheel, since there are many things that NASA perfected.
OTOH, if I were NASA, I wouldn't be to thrilled to have things outsourced to a private company, let alone one run by a jackass.

Seeing as he's just been a lucky money guy and is no rocket surgeon, he needs to be kept away from all the engineering.
