I fear the GOP will fight funding to replace it and repair the harbor because they want to see the effects of the closure harm Biden. Assholes.

Nah, I think the optics on this are so overwhelming that even the most ardent of MAGAs aren't going to oppose funding.
They'll focus on how THEY rebuilt it and it's BIDEN's fault that it fell down in the first place. And they started on the blame part before the recovery mission was declared over. So 6 men are in the bottom of the harbor, and the MAGA assholes are talking about their immigration status and blaming the mayor of Baltimore for the collapse.
Six men working their asses off to try and maintain that bridge in the middle of the night lost their lives (and the 2 that survived aren't in great shape, so no guarantee that they'll live) in a horrible way. And all the MAGA care about is if they were here illegally.
I don't know if they were or not. But that seems to be a matter that should be directed at their employer, not the men themselves. And what happens if they were all legal citizens? Let's say that they can trace their citizenship back generations. Does that make what happened to them somehow more tragic?

I knew the minute I heard the names of the crew that there would be a lot of pure ugly showing up to make America great again.
And I also knew even sooner that no opportunity to create alternate versions of the event would go unsquandered.

Friend who is a structural engineer said that the bridge itself was a poor design - it shouldn't have fallen in the manner it did. (She does acknowledge that at the time, people thought it was a great design)
She also said that it should be a wake-up call for other cities with similar bridges to start shoring up their bridges and looking into ways to prevent another tragedy. Because while these bridges were state-of-the-art when they were first build, the state has passed and they face new dangers and challenges that weren't imaginable when they were designed and constructed.
I doubt people in the 60's and 70's envisioned cargo ships weighing in the 100,000+ range, or cruise ships that hold 7000 people when this bridge was designed and built. So what future hazards should we consider when re-building?
