So what if the Chinese government is running it, collecting your data, making a profile on you? Does the US government not want the competition? Neither one of them have shit on Microsoft.

How are they going to prevent all the users who currently have it from keeping from using it? That's my question.
And are they banning Temu next?

Not my field of expertise but it's probably it at all difficult to block apps since there's really only two places to get them- Google Play and the iStore..... but I'm sure there are ways to block the servers.
Personally I'm on the side of shutting that shit down since it's a known communist Chinese poison pill. As far as temu, does it fail the smell test too?
Is Kaspersky still a thing?

Well, a lot of US billionaires want to buy TikTok now - almost all of them huge conservatives, so wonder why Congress is so insistent that ByteDance sell it off?
And Temu is worse IMO, cause they collect alllll of your personal data - name, address, phone, and credit card info.
Banning the Tok is the latest fad in terms of pretending that we all want to 'protect the kids'. There are so many insidious groups out there who's only purpose is to commit evil, and they're in all the 'hip' applications. So not so much FB, but places like Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Discord. And if you want the best of evil slime, then Discord is the place - most online gaming platforms run though it for in-game communications and the scumbags know it - they lurk all around trying to entice kids into doing things like sending nudes so they can be blackmailed. And believe it or not, the nude scheme is really mild compared to some of the others.

I've been following this guy for about a year or so. Never seen or heard him say anything that would lead me to believe he has an agenda (other than plugging for $ponsors and his merch)- if I thought he was even somewhat full of it, I'd not share it.

One thing he didn't mention was that China bans access to tons of websites and apps for the same reasons he mentioned- other governments' influence on their population.

I dunno. He'd have been a lot more convincing if he had actually started up a real campaign for some sort of fake cause and then had it run across platforms like Meta, TikTok and Discord to show that TikTok reached more viewers and caused them to send it on to others.
Because I have zero illusions that US based social media doesn't do the same shit that TikTok does. And selling TikTok to a group of rich conservative US investors is going to do nothing to make it safer.
In all seriousness, you want to talk about cesspools, Discord seems to be the place to be.

It's not about the cesspool it's about who manages it to their strategic advantage.
When I'm told by the NSA, FBI and the Chairman of Senate Intelligence Committee that those are a national security risk, I'll believe them then too.

I think they're all national security risks - look at the Russian bots who are infiltrating all of the other platforms as well.
Not saying that the tok doesn't deserve to be banned, but I think doing that will be harder than it sounds. And not that it will happen, but it totally needs to be noted and put on public record that several Americans have a significant amount of money directly invested in ByteDance. What are they doing (if anything) to stop disinformation from being added on that platform?
It's a true problem everywhere - these platforms are ripe for bad actors to come in and disseminate information that threatens our security both here and abroad.

What dumbfounds me is our (the vast majority of us) willingness to participate. My uncle told me when I was a little kid that they had satellites that could read the newspaper on your lap. Then I heard about a book called 1984. Then I saw a movie called "Enemy of the State", and then Alexa started showing up in everybody's homes. Now we have AI about to bloom. I'm a little bit more cautious but too many out there are completely infatuated with having the newest iphones (with awesome cameras) that "save" everything on "the cloud" so "you" don't lose your valuable information, music, movies, photos, web searches, ..., putting ALL our shit on every social media site, app, and comment section. Scanning a little barcode tag on your keychain, using your bank card/s, incessantly being asked for your phone numberand even your DL at most places you shop and even some you just visit, like the hospital for example (maybe a bad example but only one example of many).

That's hilarious and so true! I even used to have a knucklebuster for my business so I could take cards. Now someone can get the info from your card's chip while it's in your pocket. I had an RFID blocking wallet but it only held like my license and two other cards before it wouldn't close.

I have a sleeve - it fits two credit cards (or a credit card and a license) very nicely (although the package says it will fit 4 and it does, I find it easier to pull out the card with just two things in there). Best of all, it's easy to put into a wallet.
I remember looking up the damn credit cards in that little paper book with the miniscule print. And the dread of finding one in there. I was 17 and worked at a lumber/home improvement store. People can get really pissed on a bright Sunday morning when you tell them their credit card is on the list, so that 2 x 4 and plywood sheet have to go back in stock!

There was a policy that any charge over, like 50 bucks, you had to call an 800 number, enter the card number, the amount, ans write down the auth # on the charge ticket.

Some people?
My sister had to chop a card once. Called the 800# Okay ma'am, is the customer there? Yes Are you holding the card? Yes Do you feel comfortable cutting it in four pieces? What? If you cut it up and return the card to us, we will give you a $50 reward.
You know those scissors came out immediately!
