Stafford had its fine arts festival this weekend at Brooke Point HS.
Friend's granddaughter had a picture in the festival, so of course attendance was mandatory
No fully van accessible parking at the front of the school. Friend goes around to the second row and voila! Van accessible spot!
But the curb cut was at the end of the row, not where the HC spots were. So she gets out and has to scooter behind the 4 cars parked to the right of her van to get to the curb cut.
Curb cut does not have an exit!!! Yup, cut is on one side of the small island, but not the other!!
She can't turn back now - there is a 5 year old granddaughter with art that needs to be seen!
So she goes back down the curb cut and rides down the parking lot to the curb cut in front of the school and makes it inside.
Once inside, there is a nice sign showing where the art is by grade. The sign informs all that if they go down the stairs, they can see more art! But where are the elevators pray tell? Does the school have some? You'd never know from the sign (and yes, she did find someone who took her to the elevator so she could go downstairs).
The kicker to this?
She posted many, many pictures on FB with a clear description of the issue. Tagged the school board, the BOS and our school board rep (who she is friends with on FB).
School board rep's response. "had the same issue this weekend with my husband. Thankfully another couple helped us."
Nothing about this being a terrible situation that needs to be rectified. Nothing about her even bringing this up with her colleagues.
I responded that as our school board rep, she had the ability to to something to change this and that she and her other board members needed to think of the message they were sending to students - it's okay to treat the disabled as 'less than'. The needs of the able-bodied came first. Is this the inclusion that our schools claim to teach?
This shit needs to stop!
