Headline to link on NBC News from the Google News aggregate I browse every morning-
"How Black women athletes are preparing their hair for the 2024 Paris Olympics". (sic)
Gripping right?
My questions/concerns are pretty standard since the media abandoned journalism several decades ago- How is this news? Are we really this damned brain dead?
It's also worth mentioning that the headline on the NBC website is different than the one on GN but just as banal. This comes on a day where 90% of the bullshit on my Facebook feed is right wing horseshit, even though I block every single one every time they come up (some left wing bullshit too).

Should I confess to reading the article about how athletes get their equipment to the games? Hmmmmmmmmmm....
And that article should not be any type of headline - just a sports/human interest story. Because it does take a lot of extra preparation to get your hair straight if you're a black athlete - not about appearance, as much as performance - for example, swim caps.
And it is pretty interesting how various athletes are getting their shit to Paris. I liked the pole vaulters and the boats. Pam would love the horses - they get their own plane, complete with stalls.

I wasn't spellbound mind you.
Just that it was interesting in that it was something I never thought about - think of it as 'Oh, I learned something new today'
I loved how the pole vaulter said that all pole vaulters bring a lot of extra poles so that if a competitors don't make it there, they have one to loan. And that they all carried balls of twine and the like because they had to get the poles from the airport to the hotel and not all taxis and ubers have luggage racks.
The sailors all have three separate boats. The boats are disassembled and put on cargo ships. Then at the event location, the crew puts them back together. Because cargo ships take forever to get places, there's always at least one boat in transit somewhere. They had to order special sails for the olympics, but because of the transit schedule, they had to do it before the olympic trials, so they put their faith in their investment and hoped it wouldn't be wasted.
Is this noteworthy? No. But it was a nice distraction from politics and the state of the world in general. And it's what I needed this week.

I think logistics is entirely different in terms of points of interest vs black girl hair. Apparently major news organizations like NBC are compelled to focus on the banal rather than substance. This story belongs in Jet, not NBC News or Google News' reposts. The point I was making is the ongoing and ever deepening of news content provided by the media that is more about distraction than actual news that is of interest to everyone. For example, the story about a hurricane devastating a particular area of the country is of interest to everyone, whereas modern major headlines have moved toward revealing how hurricane devastation disproportionately effects *minorities and minority communities*.
*Rich people who build houses on the beach are a minority are they not?

Had this thought before- What happens to the family who had absolutely nothing to do with it and anyone brave enough to admit to being his friend (perhaps he did actually have one) in the aftermath of an attempted assassination on Felonious D.
Pretty sure bet their lives are in extreme danger whether or not that is no fault of their own isn't for the 'thorities to decide. Did they all go to witless protection?

I think that's why the media is going to such great lengths to talk about the dad calling the police in the days leading up to the shooting saying his son was upset, and the stories about him going out with friends and helping his sister move. They're attempting to show that they had no real idea that he would do this. He was acting weird, but they all thought he was having a mental health crisis, not that he'd take a shot at Trump.
I remember reading an interview with the mom of one of the kids from Columbine (don't remember what kid it was). Talked about her guilt and shame when she realized what her son had done. Like other parents that day, when news of the shooting started coming out, her first thought was of her kid's safety. Never crossed her mind that HE was the one who did it.
I think that one of her reasons for coming out and telling her story was to let other parents know that being quiet wasn't always a sign that your kid was okay, and that you should check to see what they're up to. She said that she will never get over the guilt and shame she feels for what her son did and there is no amount of therapy or counseling to take that away - she thinks about the kids he slaughtered every single day.
But it did make me think - my eldest has always been a very private person, and was even more sullen and unwilling to talk when she hit HS. My husband and I gave her space and didn't pry. So did this woman - she and her husband were trying to be good parents.
Makes me think what would have happened if this occurred today. The parents of the other shooter, along with this woman's husband (they divorced) moved and have tried to stay hidden from the public view.
