That's like complaining that The Avengers movie used a bogus NYC street layout.

So the scholar says there's relatively no mention of it.... wiki says:
New Testament Greek uses four verbs, three of them based upon stauros (σταυρός), usually translated "cross". The most common term is stauroo (σταυρόω), "to crucify", occurring 43 times; sustauroo (συσταυρόω), "to crucify with" or "alongside" occurs five times, while anastauroo (ἀνασταυρόω), "to crucify again" occurs only once at the Epistle to the Hebrews 6:6. prospegnumi (προσπήγνυμι), "to fix or fasten to, impale, crucify" occurs only once at the Acts of the Apostles 2:23.
I'm not gonna fact check this because my Greek version of the NT is packed in the basement somewhere. But I assume this is factually accurate and therefore somewhat indicative of what the KJ version contains in so many "English" words.
Methinks the scholar may be working on his own notoriety. Just a hunch.

Is there no contemporary literature describing the process? If this guy was such a great enemy of the Romans, you'd think one of them would have written down something about it.

Don't quote me on this, but I recall reading a while ago that they used ropes to tie your hands and feet to the cross - nails were just to add to your discomfort and for show.
