Now that I have put on some years,,,,, a lot more than I ever thought I would, I know now what it was that my Grampa used to be doing when sitting in his chair, in the summer breeze, under the shade tree, puffin on his pipe, with that long, long, long stare at...... nothing. I now know that he was thinking. Thinking of things that he hadn't thought of in 50 or more years maybe and reliving those thoughts..... Well I now have joined the club and have found myself thinking of things like that and just a few minutes ago had a beauty of one of those thoughts. It was FOOD ! Being in Spotsy in those days of yester-year, I was thinking of some of the food that I would eat , and thought it perfectly normal to eat, but some few years into the future and into the Uni days found out that I ate........ WHAT YOU USED TO EAT THAT !!! YUK You know the food you used to eat and very much enjoy, that later you found that some people thought you were coo coo to eat. Let me put down a few and maybe some of you can add to the list. Salt Fish Collard Greens Pigs Feet Fried Eel If you have run across this type of thing before, jump in and add to the list. Boy , where I am today, I would give my eye teeth for them again...... if I had teeth that is ..... Jump in and add to the list

I recall my mom soaking the salt fish overnight, letting them simmer in water, and then pouring a little bit of bacon drippings over the fish......loved it! Loved fried eel. I have eaten chitterlings but wasn't too wild over them. I grew up eating oysters, crabs, clams, snapping turtles, muskrat, goose, duck, quail, and never thought anything at all odd about it. It was good food. One I really miss is planked shad. I have always been willing to at least try new foods. I have eaten octopus, squid, moose, and reindeer. However, there was one I could not. Some of the Filipinos I worked with invited me to try balut. I couldn't open my mind that far let alone my mouth.

Pixiy Stix....Yuck! A few days ago I found a food from my childhood that I had not seen in probably 40 years.....Frosty Trees. They were only available around the Christmas holidays. They are little green mint flavored ice cream treats shaped like a Christmas tree. I bought a box thinking they couldn't be the same but they were......loved them.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I cannot remember anything I ate as a child that I do not eat now. Maybe Bonomo Turkish Taffy. I loved the chocolate. I have not had that in many years.

Usually it goes the other way; you expand your palate as you get older. At least that's been my observations. HoweEVAH, I used to eat things as a kid that I wouldn't touch now, like eggs. My grandmother (Maw Maw) used to make the most crazy good scrambled eggs in the whole wild world, with bacon grease and love I guess, in a cast iron skillet.... but those were the ONLY type of eggs I liked. Hers. I also used to eat raw hamburger. Who would take that gamble now? Cray. Also ate, and we'd fight over, fried chicken gizzards. Wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole now. I tried my grandad's liver and onions at the Moose Lodge once and I guess it was how the cook made it but would up having that at least once or twice there, again, not a snowball's chance in hell you'll ever see that on my plate ever again. And Braunschweiger (sp?) sandwiches, which was put in my lunchbox. I have to admit, that shit was good and even though I haven't had it 35+ years, wouldn't hesitate hooking up one of those with pumpernickel and rye, mustard and a big ol slab of onion.

As for the raw stuff I'd eat as a kid, when I helped make breaded pork chops/chicken cutlets for dinner, I'd always lick the egg/bread crumb mixture off my fingers. Best part of the meal, IMO.
Now, I'm like an OCD chef and wash my hands inbetween every cooking step I can think of. Annoying, really. I wish I was more like Pepin, that dude isn't afraid of that crap.
The only thing I can really think of as the opposite is that, as a youth, I didn't put sauce on my spaghetti and would just eat the noodles with butter. The thought of doing that now makes me gag.

Haven't had that dish in probably 50 years. I can't say I really miss it. If I were a guest and it was served I would eat it but it is not something I would seek out.
