Was that just one example of many that he might have talked about? Or was that his entire point? I feel like the sidewalks thing has a place in the discussion, but certainly isn't any sort of deciding factor. It goes along with the broken windows theory of criminal justice. A place that doesn't look as nice isn't going to be treated as nice, and the people around it aren't going to be motivated to keep the area nice, so: crime, poverty, etc. That said, who's responsibility is it to put in things like sidewalks (and street lamps, and playgrounds, and green spaces, etc.)? The developer? The city?
