My psychiatrist is having health issues and has decided to restrict his practice to Richmond for the present time. The letter I received offered to switch me to one of two others in his Fredericksburg office. However, I am loathe to "break-in" a new doctor, as I felt an honest compassion and common interests with the doc I had. Although, psychiatrists aren't therapists per se, I have confided some personal thoughts and feelings and resent the office expecting his patients to calmly swap. He isn't accepting new patients at the Richmond office, so I'm screwed.
Which brings me me to my point. I have been off one anti-depressant, Effexor, for about 10 days and am experiencing some of the published withdrawal symptoms. In about 2 weeks, my other med, Cymbalta, will run out. I apologize for any grumpiness, anger, and other ugliness that I may exhibit over the next few months. I'm not looking forward to this, but it had to be done sometime.
Let me be clear: I do not blame my shrink as he cannot help having health issues. I blame his staff as I feel this could have been handled much more compassionately.

Most likely your PCP will do these RXs for you.....just explain the situation to them. Call the shrinks office and have your prescription records transferred to your PCP.....they legally have 15 days to do this. The homicidal grumpiness of withdrawals is only part of it, the nausea can be downright debilitating. If you decide to quit the Cymbalta.......the best way I found to wean off of it is to do exactly what the drug maker says NOT to do. Open up the caps and take out 5 grains. The next day take out 10. The next day 15 grains and so on. Good luck.
I feel more human being off of Cymbalta but I had no idea how much it helped with nerve pain until I weaned off of it. It has been about 3 years now and I am so tempted some days to go back on it.

Effexor was awesome. Super vivid dreaming, so my doc took me off it. I ended up quitting them all, which worled well for me. I'm sorry you need them, ans glad you can get them - good luck for future

DR- I see your point, but the best thing to do is switch over doctors if he/she is an option. We had a similar issue years ago with her oncologist, the difference being he supposedly retired, even though it appears he now has a general health practice in Duck NC..... The switch over from our old piecemeal set of doctors and whatnot, especially when it comes to the meds, has been one fiasco after another with Kaiser. I think most of that has now been worked out after the better part of a year. My psych canceled my last appt at the last minute and then the next appt they could give me was after Christmas! What the ACTUAL fuck? ? At least she refilled my scripts ONCE but even those run about a week short of the next appt. FML. Anyway. Effexor made my problems way worse and I don't remember why I quit Cymbalta but you definitely have to ween off of it. I don't remember that regimine either. I'm now on Celexa and Buspar, and they ain't working either. The dreams are crazy bizarre vivid and in living color. And I still have issues with the general panicky feeling, especially whenever a stressful situation arises, which is only about 3-5 times a day...... However, the "episodes" that send me seeking emerrgency rooming have been minimal for a few months. Hopefully you can get this resolved without having to resort to going without.

I miss the vivid dreams! Actually the Effexor helped turn off my brain so I could get to sleep - I miss that. I'm also suffering from intermittent dizziness and a constant dull headache, along with occasional nausea.
I know the Cymbalta helps with the joint pain but I have Tramadol to help with that.
I was hoping to go another year before I got off this stuff. I've been on Cymbalta way too long - maybe 10 years?
Thanks, you guys!

I am thinking why not try the new Dr. For all you know he or she may be as good or better than the previous one, if you give them the same trial period. You can always back out if it doesn't work. Trust is a long process, not a first impression thing. just my 2c
<------ Yeah, advice from him.

Yeah, I'd go with the new dr too - worst case scenario is that you instantly take a dislike to them and leave. Who is it BTW? I see someone in Woodbridge - had bad experiences with the local psychos. I took Efferxor for many years - it kept me perpetually hyper - now on Cymbalta and life is good.

I will never forget those Effexor dreams. Super vivid, and bizarre.
What they said, give the new one a go. Is there anything in particular you're looking for in a doc?

Oh yeah, it took me 3 months to wean off of Cymbalta. So you might want to think about getting a refill......better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

You all are going to laugh and shake your heads. Okay, here goes. I was anxious about seeing a psych. This guy (Gaetner - used to head the psych hospital here) came highly recommended by a current patient and friend along with my PCP's nurse. When he came out to get me from the waiting room, he had a little terrier following him. She was a rescue named Stevie and he brings her to work all the time. He's a dog lover, so much so that Stevie and one of his other dogs sleep with him. So, We instantly had a common interest. Having lost pets, he has experienced a lot of what I'm dealing with. This is why I trust him.
John, do you like your doc? Do you recommend her?
ETA: Snowden! That's what it's called!

I've only seen her once so it would be unfair to say either way. I went in with a lot of preconceptions and took them all with me when I left.... nothing like I had expected. Which is a good thing, IMO. I also don't know if she has a practice outside of Kaiser.... Her Page
