As misguided, wrong, and irresponsible as I think it is, I don't like the government making laws about it. I don't even like the truancy laws.

The things we think are a matter necessity and which ones the government should be dictating are sometimes two very different perspectives. However, I'm almost always against nanny state laws regardless of the positives. I just don't think being an American is about No Swimming: Alligator signs and codes of conduct.
But if you want to go right to where the rubber meets the road, congress shall make no law with respect to the establishment of religion or the free exercise thereof and the case in OP is closed no matter how stupid the rest of us think it is and how necessary a few of us think the greater good is above the Constitution. Cheeses wept.

Allowing a religious exemption so someone can be extra stupid is a Bad Thing. But it's Texas, and they want their people extra stupid.

I don't see "get a damned education" as a religious law. Maybe if it were "get a God damned education"...
PS Does any religion require that their followers be ignorant?*
*Trick question...

Maybe your memory ain't as sharp as you think. I know mine sucks because I don't recall being outraged about that. Care to dig it up and post it?

Do you believe we should allow people to raise their children as compleat ignoramuses? They will be the epitome and apotheosis of useless moochers. They won't even know what bootstraps are, much less that they can be pulled up on.

Circumstantial evidence fail. LOL! I remember, I was merely surprised to learn that a 16 year could legally pilot a plane unaccompanied. But it would surprise me even more if I were to be anywhere near outraged about it. And it's a straw man argument not attributable to the base concept of the nanny state.

It seems like it to me, but I'm open to similar concepts opposing unwelcome government involvement in your life and living it how you see fit. If government "allows" you to go from cradle to grave, generation after generation, on the public's dime (which you seem ok with) then it would seem we agree on some level no?
And yes, if you choose to raise your kids to be ignoramuses, that's not up to me to tell you that you can't and if you don't, what? You go to jail? We take your kids?
Nanny says?

For my part, I see education of our citizens as an investment in our country's future.
They will be expecting all sorts of entitlements, too. They'll demand we keep Government away from "their" Medicaid.

Makes you want to invest in re-educating 3 of those justices. Or 5 of them, depending on your perspective.

Well, it would be de-educating the five if you wanted to get the desired results. There wasn't one iota of truth, fact, or logic to the state's case in passing that abortion bill.

And YET 3 of them still ruled in favor of what is ultimately the state's attempt to take charge of people's personal decision/s.

Makes you want to invest in re-educating 3 of those justices. Or 5 of them, depending on your perspective. After the citizen's united case, the scotus has been rendered pretty much irrelevant to the citizenry. I think we are on the proper course for remedy, which is not to replace them. Let attrition do the job, until there are no more to interfere with the corporatocracy. Cuts down on the lead time.

The nanny state isn't really all that nanny. The war on recreational drugs is run by General Nanny. The war on prescription drugs is run by Surgeon General Nanny. That's pretty nanny.
