At least something is going fairly OK. 1300 calories on the elliptical last night, and 1200 tonight. Keep it up, I might lose and ounce.
Set the Lifestep 9500 (Yeah, I know, they are _all_ 9500's, but I mean the old ones) to 70% drag, and I can coax 1000 calories out of 'em in about 1 hr and 4 - 6 minutes or so, on 70% drag - a level of "14" out of a max of 20 for that setting. 50 RPM yields a comfortable pace. Heart rate stays under 130 for most of the event, only rising to about 135 during the last 10 - 15 minutes when going for 1200 - 1300.
Noticed big improvements years ago when I got cardio-fit with these things. I went from things like having to look at a 9 digit phone number several times while dialing it, to simply looking at in and being able to dial it all in 1 go. Aerobic fitness does a lot for brain fitness. There's other indications along those lines too.
And of course my heart health from having been in good shape last year when the dual pulmonary emboli hit allowed my very-strong heart muscle to pump thru the challenge for about 2 - 3 weeks, while the high-power blood thinner Xarelto dissolved the clots. 3 different medics told me if I hadn't been in such good cardio shape, my heart would have fatigued and simply quit. Doctor said I was "hanging by a thread" but the super-strong heart from all the elliptical work allowed it to continue.
And that's about the best I can do to start a health thread. I suppose I could tell y'all about my intestinal infection that I'm just getting over, and all the side-effects that have come with it since its onset last Sept. 8, but I think it would be a bit too scary and way too much information. It was: painful, debilitating, messy, and no fun at all. Still not 100%, but better than I was even last week. Lots of internal gas - OK, that's too much information too, but that's the big remaining problem that is much better this week than last, leading me to think that maybe I'm getting beyond it. Time will tell.

Good for you for getting back to the gym! Did you have C-diff by any chance? My mom got that and was flat on her back for over 2 months - it's nasty, nasty nasty. I'm thinking of joining the Rouse Center, but need to get off my fat ass and do something....

Good for you for getting back to the gym! Did you have C-diff by any chance? My mom got that and was flat on her back for over 2 months - it's nasty, nasty nasty. I'm thinking of joining the Rouse Center, but need to get off my fat ass and do something.... My GI doctor, Dr. Mastri, I think tested for every single-celled flora or fauna that could be doing all this and everything came back negative. Of course the tests were done mostly after the infection part of it had pretty much passed. The rest of it, excessive gas and such, hung on a lot longer, but I think was "something else." Dunno what. And yeah, its great to be back to the gym. The more I pump that thing, the stronger my legs get. After a while, like now, I walk around and feel really, really strong in the legs. Getting up out of a chair is very much easier than it has been at some other "low" times with respect to strength. Haven't reverted yet to taking stairs 2 at a time like I used to do, but not far off, I think. Used to do that all the time, but OTOH, in 6 months I'll be 70, so... maybe not. And thanks for the good recognition. Makes me feel good. Not familiar with Rouse Center, but anything that works. I do Sport and Health and like it, but it is a bit "worn" - the exercise equipment is all still top-notch and fully functional, but some frills are a bit less than they could be - locker room is not really "nice" any more, the TV audio could be better. They broadcast the TV's audio on different FM channels, but they had a guy in a few months ago to repair it all, and he obviously didn't know FM, and set a couple of the transmitters to non-functional FM channels, such as 90.2. There is no 90.2 FM channel, its either 90.1 or 90.3. All the FM channels are odd numbers to the right of the decimal. So 90.2 interferes with 90.1 and the TV I use is... guess where... on 90.1. Yeah, I could use a different TV, but the 90.1 is right in front of my favorite elliptical. Geeeezzzz... if anything can go wrong it will!!! <GGG> So I get the Fox News TV audio off the internet via my subscription to Sirius / XM Radio and their internet service. All for now, but thanks again for the kind comments.

Have had an array of seemingly unrelated symptoms, some for a long time. I acquired a new one a couple nights ago (don't ask! <G>) and read up on that one and... it seems that the cause of a great many of my health anomalies may be dehydration. The symptom a couple nights ago was accompanied by a headache earlier in the day, which is significant because the vast majority of headaches are dehydration-related. So, I'm beginning to put 2 and 2 together, as some of these symptoms are better than 10 years old. A fact I learned last year is that older people become dehydrated much easier, and I R old now. You see these celebrities collapse, and later you hear, "dehydrated." Yep. And 9 years ago I was having a symptom that came and went as I was doing my thing in Iraq. Couldn't figure that out, but drank a lot of water there - we had these larger-than-normal bottles of water available everywhere on base to fight the heat, I drank a lot, and... this one symptom went away. Couldn't understand it. Now I think I do. And, that same symptom is gone today, after starting drinking extra water yesterday. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. But this stuff is really subtle.
Anyway, the gym is easier with extra water, and I stepped off 1000 calories after poker last night at the gym with heart rate really low, hanging around 110 for a long time before finally going up. Would have done 1200 calories, but it was too close to midnight and I'd have run into the gym closing time.
Some of the symptoms are a heart flutter, where I'm a bit short of breath and weak, and then there's the "cough up mucous" thing that was going on as far back as Iraq, and some other stuff that would be too much information if mentioned. But anyway, I'm going to have to treat water like taking a drug - a liter of water every 5 hours or so. See how that goes.
All this mentioned here for the benefit of other ancients here that may be having mysterious health anomalies that aren't worth going to the doctor over, or you go to the doctor and they don't have a clue.

I drink a lot of fluids (mostly diet coke), so never had a dehydration problem. Just scored a free rowing machine last night - it's in the back o the car waiting to be unloaded into the basement Going to try it out and see how it goes

Good luck with the rowing machine, at least the price was right. Should be good cardio with some upper body strength benefits too.
Some of my symptoms I can say pretty confidently are _not_ dehydration related after practically drowning today, but still experiencing them. Others did not manifest, so maybe.
I also drink lots of carbonated and caffienated drinks, and these are also listed as a problem for at least one of my symptoms. This is going to be hard to track. May still end up going back to my GI doctor.

Well, gym is still improving, with most of my 1st-hour exercise on the elliptical coming with a heart rate under 120 now. Whee, the heart can still get stronger with exercise, it seems. That's a good thing at my age (69.) Got 5800 calories of exercise this last week, and intend to get another 1200 or so this afternoon. 349,364 calories of exercise since I restarted my quest to lose weight (have lost 30 lbs) on July 11, 2014. Exercise doesn't work as well as exercise plus Nutrisystem, but am sick of Nutrisystem so I'm just exercising for now.
Most of the lower GI problems have cleared up except for a bit more gas generation than there should be, and can even eat movie popcorn again.

May still end up going back to my GI doctor. I cut way back on carbonated beverages and my GERD symptoms decreased by at least 90% I would say. That and eating slower and not stuffing myself as I used to do before. The only carbonated beverage I drink now is Ginger Ale, and that I only drink occasionally. Beer doesn't count as it is even more rare that I drink that. I've lost 5 pounds since cutting my sugar intake by 50% too.
