The Rs said they'd create thousands of new long-lasting jobs. They're just delivering on that promise.

Kind of off topic, but about those jobs.....
Does anyone here get the WaPo print version? We get the Sunday local fish wrap (who used to say that on FUG?) and the classified section consisted of exactly one page of "help wanted" ads. Just curious what the big dc paper looks like. Now I know that in this day and age you have to go online to find jobs, but per my extensive experience in browsing those sites, the grand majority of ads are bullshit "jobs" that one might take in order to pay for one's beer, if said beer were on sale. Thanks Hector and Maria, glad we could offer you a better life at the expense of ours.

I had a very difficult time finding job postings through newspapers, whether virtual or online - most companies have switched either to their own corporate website, or to a place like Monster.com It was also extremely difficult to find generalist jobs, where you didn't need experience directly tailored to that field (for example, you could find an office job, but only if you had experience in the real estate field. Why do you need that to answer a phone and greet customers?)
It really sucks for new graduates, and people who are using unemployment. New graduates have not really been trained on how to job hunt properly to begin with, but the tools they are given (make sure to follow up your applicatio with a phone call...go around your local mall and fill out applications at stores that are hiring) don't work anymore. And VA unemployment is mired in the dark ages - you have to submit three "verifiable" job references each week. A verifiable reference has a contact name, phone and physical address. Works really well, when you're applying at savemyass.com for an accounting opening somewhere in Manassas. My entire 'work' life consisted of finding those three references early in the week so that I could do some actual research and try and find an actual job.
And even though I am a college graduate, don't get me started on jobs that 'require' a degree as the minimum requirement for clicking submit....

I looked into getting my CDL. I even studied for the learner's permit and feel like I could pass it no problem. There's a huge training place right in Ladysmith. It's about $4000 or so and only takes about a month. Of course, there's no way I could afford that but from what I hear it might be possible to get the VEC to pay for it, or possibly sign up through Germanna and apply through FAFSA. The problem is, even if you're lucky enough to land a grant or a loan, then go through the training and get your CDL (I was thinking about getting the A because you can do anything and the training isn't all that much different) every place you look at that's hiring drivers wants 2 years of experience. I have not seen one single ad that says anything about entry level or newly licensed... so exactly where in the phuque are you supposed to get the experience? Then there's the option of going through one of the big OTR trucking companies that will train you for free and put you on the road with someone to get your experience before they send you out on your own. Sounds great until you realize that the only companies that do this are OTR (over the road) and you spend most of your life ON the road, barely ever home. You're stuck with them for at least a year in order to compensate for the training. And not to mention but it's a grueling job that's getting worse all the time. Just look up the new electronic logging laws going into place.

John, I'm just throwing this out there, but most counties are crying for school bus drivers, and they start about $15 here, and might not be so hard on your back to start. They will help you get a cdl, and something you could start now, and you would still have time left to pursue other things. When I retired I looked into this but caught on at parks and rec, and I liked that being outside. Just a thought.

Friend did the complete CDL in Canada - she was going to be an OTR driver. Got everything but the big rig, because the last item on the exam requires you to pull yourself into the trailer with one hand (you grab the door and hoist yourself up). She has an old shoulder injury, and re-aggravated it in training practicing the move, so she was unable to get the leverage to pull herself up.
Larry has an excellent point though - all counties are looking for drivers, and the pay isn't horrible. Plus if you're willing to drive for extracurricular events like sports, you get paid extra.

In the original statement, the figure was 2.3 trillion by the pentagon, which is significant, but the real figure is 21 trillion by the dod and hud. How do you see this as being played out? Maybe some form of debt forgiveness, like usual, followed by requests for bigger budgets?

Why worry, peon? Nothing can or will be done.

I am going to hate myself for this, but I will follow up with you. Nothing can be done isn't necessarily the same as will be done, though in this case it may well be. 21 trillion is more than our yearly gross domestic product, and to me this is significant. To me this is more newsworthy than some football player showing his ass, or which tv star grabbed someone's ass. if I can remember my scientific notation, let's see 21 trillion (2.1 times 10 to the 13th) divided by let's say 350 million, including our guests (3.5 times 10 to the 5) comes out around about $60,000 per person, not family but EVERYONE. That is money that comes from taxpayers, and is not the dod's to acquire and use it as they see fit without oversight. Yet we are shutting down healthcare, pensions, social security because of deficit spending. Perhaps if people were made to realize and understand what's going on something could be done, at least to stop the hemorrhaging. This is in fact an illegal "tax" that we are not being made aware of. Apathy is playing a supporting role to the systemic corruption that is plaguing us, and yes, debt is slavery.
To sum up my feelings, if 1/3 the effort spent debating this piddly ass tax break proposal were used to let people know the real world taxing going on here, yes, I think we could change things. It wouldn't be pretty, but it could happen.
Who are you to call anyone a peon?

There's no debate about the tax bill.
We are all peons.
