Yeah, Virginia did a ton of work in the 80's and early 90's to wean tobacco farmers off tobacco and on to a new crop in order to help the farmers stay in business - to me a good example of government taking action to help an industry stay afloat when conditions changed. Virginia is not the top soybean producing state (that honor goes to Illinois), but on average, the US exports 31 million metric tons of soybeans to China each year. I believe corn is the top US export.
We export a shit ton of crops and animal products (beef, chicken, pork, dairy, ect). I don't think many Americans realize how much of our GNP comes from farming.
