If it wasn’t for pizza, I’d never have a hot meal!
Seriously, good for you. I’m just riding it out. Fuck it all. No more doctors except those required to keep my current prescriptions. No more surgery. I’m done.

So if I'm hearing John right, next month he can have McD's since it's not wrapped in foil, and is delivered in a paper bag

A higher power told me I could have a Sausage McGriddle yesterday morning, and I've learned to ignore those voices at my peril Seriously though, I've been using an app (Lose It) to track my food. I only look at calories and fat grams, and try to stay within the range that the app says I should be in, but if I go over, so be it. In the past year, I've lost 5lbs. Not amazing, granted but it's stayed off. And I'm also finding that I'm not eating the entire box of oreos in a sitting usually. The app asks you to weigh yourself everyday at the same time - I was skeptical, but it's amazing how seeing the scale go from 100 to 100.4 motivates you to put down that last cookie so that .4 goes away tomorrow.... The app is free, or you can upgrade to premium for $40/year (which allows you to sync it with a fitness tracker, set more goals, and get recipes and exercises). Unless you want to sync it with a fitbit or something, the free version works fine. I spent a month just entering what I ate and ignoring the calorie or fat counts. Then I started noting where I was eating the most and started from there - I ate an amazing amount of snacks during the day at work, so I started by switching out chocolate for mini pretzels. I only had something with chocolate after I ate a small bowl of pretzels. After a few weeks of doing that (again, just entering the shit in only), I noticed that I was eating a little less chocolate, so I started eating more pretzels. Shit like that. I ate what I thought was a crapton of food over the holidays, but it turns out to be less than I thought - I think my mind is starting to get to the point where it remembers that eating two spoons of green beans means a brownie may be in my future....

A few years ago when I shed 35 or so pounds, I was using Lose-It. It was a pretty good app for being a free version. I signed up for Noom last week, free trial, and it seems like a decent idea but is way more than I want to fool with app-wise. I always get this notion that all the communications and messages are either pregenerated or some "work from home" person in Sumatra plugging in ready made responses from software. Also, the free in free trial ends next week and with that, so will my interest.
Probably going back to Lose-It or one of the others like it. Was actually looking up other ones last night and it is amazing how many there are, and how they vary so greatly on what they say about my intake. The formulas are all similar but again, the net can vary greatly. Noom has me at <=2200 calories /day, while Mayo Clininc is <=1800 cal/day. Don't remember what Lose-It was, but IIRC I was trying to stay under 2000, and it worked.
For now I want to keep the focus mainly on calories but Noom has a very good system that doesn't get into macros, just food categories, Red, Yellow, Green. Not real complicated to figure out which means what.
Your goals depends on the % of each category. I think mine is 20-40-40 but can't recall as right now I'm not too concerned with that, only calories. Going to work with <=2000/day and will try to set up my own RYG system in my consciousness as time goes on.
Oh yeah.... 20 days without fast food or bar food. So I got that goin for me, which is nice.

Hey 20 days is nothing to sneeze at! I had looked at noom, but the whole 'encouragement' thing didn't sit well with me. I did cough up some bucks to do a diabetes management program at the Y last year. It was composed of in-person group sessions to discuss different components of nutrition, exercise and weight-loss. They didn't recommend any particular diet 'plan' - they said you had to do what worked best for you. The program goal was to lose 7% of your body weight, and exercise for 250 minutes a week by the end of the year. I made it to 150 minutes a week of exercise, but didn't hit the 7% (although others did). Mr. Minx didn't like the 'chatty' aspect of it, but I found it helpful. What was most helpful to me though was that it did teach me a different way of eating, and it also taught me not to be so uptight about the whole weight thing - it isn't a competition, but something you really have to do for life. This is a link to recommended calorie and fat intake per day www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/diabetes/overview/preventing-type-2-diabetes/game-planAnd I thought this link was kind of cool - you input how much weight you want to lose by when, along with your exercise intake per week, and it will tell you how much calories to eat. www.niddk.nih.gov/bwp

Not bad: www.niddk.nih.gov/bwpPut that into my own situation and it mostly agreed with what I'm about to do / resume (after annoying little cold which is mostly gone - restarting diet tomorrow (all diets start on Monday, right? <G>)) That's worth bookmarking. It said I should eat 1584 calories per day to reach my goal while walking 90 minutes a day at a moderate pace. I have the eating at 1300 in my spreadsheet. I think I should have said "light" walking to match the elliptical setting I used. But thanks for the link. Now I just have to figure out where to bookmark it - my bookmark stash is HUGE. BTW, goal is losing 10 lbs in 21 days from a 215 lb start point. If one doesn't have a gym membership, then this is useful. Any page on the subject of weight loss always says walking is good exercise. This shows it, but also shows that it doesn't mean walking to the end of the block and back, it means a serious distance every damned day. Fine. Just so's we know. Advantage for elliptical is: Watching TV, never too hot, never too cold, never any ice, never any rain, never any traffic trying to run over you. Advantage to walking: Cheap, do it from the front door without having to drive to gym. But this calculator an convince you that you can do this if you're willing to do what it says.

10 lbs in 21 days is a lot of weight loss Rally. You may want to think of setting a slightly longer goal. Too much at once can be unhealthy.
I did like that calculator - very realistic IMO.

10 lbs in 21 days is a lot of weight loss Rally. You may want to think of setting a slightly longer goal. Too much at once can be unhealthy. I did like that calculator - very realistic IMO. I looked it up, there's no "unhealthy weight loss" as long as you're getting nutrition. And 1/2 lb a day is a matter of diet and exercise. Did exactly that last January - 10 lbs in 21 days - its just a matter of sticking with it. I gained 20 lbs over the year for several reasons of not being able to exercise at all - early in the year, a bit of knee pain was suspected of being an injury, and so I didn't want to make it worse so I stopped exercising. There was another reason I didn't exercise for a while too, can't remember what it was. But anyway, gained 20 lbs. Need to lose it, but will have to settle for 10 lbs this year 'cuz of the cold I had the last 2 1/2 weeks, and the fact that I am leaving the last week of February to go to a rally in Tucson. Can't eat the way I need to when away from home, and can't exercise at Gold's the way I need to. The injury from the statin drugs would prevent the 90 minute walking, I think, or yeah, I could do it, but a left hip muscle hurts from being injured by the statin. Statins can cause muscle wasting, which is what happened after using one for 8 years - it suddenly decided it didn't like me any more. Lipitor. Doctor tried Simvastatin later, which was even worse. Statins are dangerous. Good news is that the 1 1/4 lbs I lost during the 1st 4 days of exercising before getting the cold has held. Started at 216.5, now 215.25. Hope to get to 205 this year. If I can hold that thru the year, I'll take it down to 195 next year.
