Back in the 80s there was an old man named Jerry Smith who worked in the warehouse where I got my first job in the electronics business. I will always remember him saying "more people have been killed in the name of religion than all the wars in the history of the world". I was barely 20 and ill prepared to weigh in on that assertion. I think he may have been incorrect at the time but I'm starting to think it may have been more prophetic than he knew.

He was spot-on.
So much hatred based on religion alone and nothing else. And so much because you aren't the 'right' kind of Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, whatever.
I read a story about a village in Ghana last night. They were Muslim, and the majority leaders in that area decided that they weren't Muslim enough (the impression I got was that this was the equivalent of the Methodists saying the Presbyterians weren't 'Christian' enough). So the 'majority' went into the village and destroyed it in 3 hours. The woman who was the focus of the story was 55, and she talked about how they had less than 5 minutes warning that something bad was about to happen - she ran to hide in a religious building of some sort with dozens of other women. The attackers then started firing machine guns through the windows and trying to open holes in the walls so they could fire in through there. When that didn't work, they threw bottles of gas inside - she managed to climb out a back window with some others, and they hid in a field for two more hours while they watched their village burn.
I don't think we can even remotely picture what that must feel and look like. My neighbors are a pain-in-the-ass, but at least I'm pretty confident that they're not going to burn our cul-de-sac and kill everyone in it.

Let me propose a hypothetical question, based on your observations. Suppose, just suppose with no other factors that the Notre Dame church was damaged by people that wanted to send a message, and the Frenchies knew it. Here is the question: would they be likely to reveal that, or would they have reason not to?

These days, I don’t think they could keep something like this quiet.

I agree with K9 - if Notre-Dame wasn't an accident, it would be all over the news by now.
I'm just sad for all of the people living in violent countries, and those who have to experience it directly.
Speaking of which, the Oklahoma City bombing was 24 years ago last Friday. Didn't seem to get a lot of coverage.

Domestic terrorism isn't as sexy as the other flavors, especially Islam n Creme.
WRT Notre Dame, no way they could keep a lid on that. But the conspiracy theorists will keep us posted.
