It says Mercy Killing. we really should be careful about assumptions. He very well could have decided that life had nothing left for her and without her, nothing left for him. It could have been decided between them long ago. The financial burden and even ruin can play it's part but I have my doubts that was even the main reason.
Once upon a time the front line support system cam from family. Another unfortunate side effect of the steadily deteriorating state of the traditional family unit is that support system has gone out the window for a lot of people. I've had a fucking front row seat to that shit show. Those brothers, sisters, aunties, cousins, all total zero help and you would be astounded at the ways they find to make shit even worse.

Too many people assume that their family will be beside them through thick or thin. Too many family members make the assumption that it will be easy to be there. And it is easy. Until you have to take lots of time off work to take your ailing family member to the doctor. And you can't afford the cost of the new prescription your spouse needs, so you cut back on something else *again*. Or you have to move because you need to be closer to the specialists that your child needs. And so on....
Plus too many family members live far away now. My SIL lived 10 minutes from my MIL. Out of the other 3 kids in the family, we were the closest at 1.5hrs away. BIL #1 lives in FL, BIL #2 lives in CO. Hard to do hands-on care in those situations, so the burden landed on my SIL.
As John noted, it's a total shit show, and I don't see it getting a lot better anytime soon.

This country will NEVER be great until we decide once and for all that health Care is a basic Human Right, and the profiteers are removed from it.
