And yes, the death of a child is a horrible thing, especially when your stupidity is what led to it.

However, you misuse a deadly weapon, or fail to secure it, too bad for you! I totally and sincerely think that these people do need to be brought up on charges and if found guilty, sent to jail.
There are laws already on the books dealing with careless use of a weapon, which also include failure to secure it properly. At this point, they need to be enforced - it's probably the only way these jackasses are going to wake up and realize that securing their firearm properly isn't a suggestion.
