Dead on arrival in the house and if they try to skirt around Congress, they're just helping our cause next November. People DO NOT like their Social Security fucked with no matter what party they're affiliated with. The ones who scream about these programs, and being for "freeloaders" have absolutely no idea what's entailed with qualifying for, and receiving them.
That said, the current system can be exploited and there should be some better oversight of that. The people who know how to "game" the system make it that much more difficult for those in need. On the flip side of that, if you don't know how to "game" the system, you get dealt out at every hand, even if you are SO obviously disabled that it's criminal to "review" anything, let alone undergo rescreening EVER./
I'm still being evaluated by doctors, having tests done (SS just had me get some xrays taken the other day), and waiting to be denied. It's 99.9% guaranteed that's going to be the case, and I'm already preparing to get an attorney to appeal their decision. A friend of mine had a husband that, same age as me, basically had his insides rotting, liver was shot, and in persistent pain. DENIED. They went through the process for 2 years and were finally approved. He died about a month later. The final insult was when SSDI made the payment to the bank, the bank rejected it because of the amount (seriously) and SS told them there was a waiting period to have the deposit re-submitted. So in this world, the way these people want to stomp and piss all over the less fortunate, they would say "well, he's dead now so why would we give his wife, who works, that money"? Just saying. You and I know why, but there's a mindset that would let us all die first so we never get a cent of THEIR money.

So, so true.
Friend's husband (who's about 45 now), had a brain tumor (which was benign, but still needed to be removed). After the removal, he had a brain bleed. And then he had a stroke. Legally blind, and has severe balance issues. Plus he now has a shunt in his brain, and has had two follow-up surgeries in the past two years to relieve pressure on his skull.
Should be a slam dunk, but it took two tries and a lawyer to get him approved.
Another friend had a similar situation - already had mobility issues and then had a saddleblock embolism. She coded three times in the ICU, and has no feeling in her right foot, and has lost a lot of function in her left hand. She can walk short distances (like from the front door to the driveway) in a walker. Only reason she was approved on the first try was because her former employer hired a lawyer as part of her severance package.
It's not right at all.
And don't get me started on that delayed benefit check. I worked in a nursing home back in the day as a business manager, and that damn check screwed over more people than I could count. So many spouses dealing with the stress and confusion of putting someone into a nursing home in the first place, would get those checks and pay frivolous things like the rent or the electric bill, only to find out that that check belonged to us. And yeah, the corporation who ran the place wanted that money back, even if it meant the outside spouse paid it back at $20/mo.

And all that to get what? $771 a month for SSI and "up to" $1800 a month for SSDI. And guess what else?? If I'm approved for SSDI, she loses her SSI! And guess what else??? Now that WE have "up to" $1800 a month to live on, we are shittin in the high cotton! and either one or both of us could lose other benefits!!! YAY for retrumplicunts trying to make it even MORE difficult!!!
One thing I keep hearing (mainly from the guys in expensive suit jackets) is that you are either disabled or you aren't, and that it makes no difference as far as what job/s you can't do, as long as you can do ANY, you are not disabled. Problem is, if you read through everything, SSA doesn't say that. It says that considerations for award of disability benefits will be largely decided on your medical history but ALSO taken depending on age, work history, education level, and even the job market according to those things. So it's another falsehood perpetrated by people with Platinum Parachutes and the slobber jawed sheep that follow their world view, turned into a reality for people who very simply cannot be gainfully employed given the negatives of those exact same criteria. "John, you can type this stuff on a computer, you can get a job as a receptionist". Denied.
That's really the essence of why there are Disability Lawyers.
PS- When I applied back in June, in person, the SSA lady told me judges were getting extremely tired of hearing the slam dunk cases. SSA contracts private companies to do the medical reviews and they work just like insurance companies. Your info is gathered, processed, and handled primarily by people with ZERO medical/medicine qualifications. They "say" that all cases are "reviewed" by a medical professional but nowhere in the documents I've read about the process does it say where they have the final say on whether the claimant is or is not "disabled". So when I get denied and go to appeal, I'm going to have my lawyer demand a list of everyone who handled my medical information, their position, their qualifications, and what if any HIPAA violations may have occurred in the processing.

Look, the oligarchy would prefer if we can all just shut up and die quietly, they have swimming pools of cash to flop around in, and all that yammering is SUCH a distraction.
PS Someone close to me is trying to get SSI. Had their hearing the other week. System is pretty rigged.
