It’s not just chickens and pigs. Many many meat processing plants have had to close because so many workers got covid. And the ones that are still operating aren’t providing PPE according to some reports. Ick.

Don't worry - El Jeffe has used his mighty powers to invoke the defense production act yet again.
So now these large corporations can safely re-open without having to improve working conditions in any way shape or form. Despite the fact that many of the cluster outbreaks center around their operations. And of course if you work for them, it's either shut your trap and feed your family, or speak up and starve.
All so people can toss some burgers on the BBQ this weekend and bitch about not being able to go to the mall.
Meanwhile hundreds of small farmers are having to plow their crops under because they have no one to help harvest them or a way to get them to market. Perhaps we should help them. We could form a department to figure out these type of logistics so they don't have to. We could name it something with agriculture in it's name, and have all sorts of scientists and statisticians who can re-route supply chains and help farmers! Oh wait.....
There's a special place waiting for Trump and his cronies.

And the animals are still dying, even if they won’t be “processed “. It sickens me. Although death is probably welcomed given the conditions in which they are for to live.

The people I feel sorriest for are the smaller farmers. Most of them aren't forcing 2000 chickens into a space built for 2, but they're the ones on the bottom of the processing pyramid. Tyson's will always get the majority of their chickens processed, but the smaller guys are fighting for space to get anything processed. And they're the ones who will actually care about their animals and will at least try to give them a humane death.
Tysons "Food supply chain is breaking" Translation "We don't want to provide humane working conditions for our workers, but to continue to exploit them"

Pigs have been suffering for decades, too. And now this administration has loosened the oversight on pork producers even more. Expect more pandemic-like sicknesses to come.

I remember when I was bald face boy ma daddy used to tell me "don't you EVER buy anything from Tyson Food or I'll whoop...." something to that effect. He was in the union UFCW (worked for Safeway) and had a major bone for Tyson's. Do not remember why and he can't either, but I think it had something to do with how they operated, imported their labor, even in the mid 70s. It was probably not until maybe 5 years ago that I ever put something in my cart with that lablel.

Tyson's (and all those other huge meatpackers like Perdue) are total scum. They employ a lot of immigrants (both legal and illegal) and work them to death in miserable conditions. And I do blame them for the huge increase in factory farms. Granted, my parents didn't really have a pot to piss in when I was growing up, but I also don't remember my better-off friends having steaks and london broil on a regular basis. And when we had chicken, we had an entire bird, not chicken breasts, or chicken tenderloins.
We really have gotten completely away from a natural form of eating. Not saying meat is off the table, but I do remember having to be more creative in cooking 'lesser' cuts of meat, and using more fillers like beans, rice, pasta and other veggies to fill out dinner - smaller pieces of meat, and more veggies. Now it seems that it's the reverse.

When I was a kid, eating steaks was a, wait forrrrrr ittttt......... rare-ity. The "lesser cuts" of meat was our reality. Bone in chuck roasts were used for half of the beef meals we ate because they were like .49/lb and if you waited a day .39/lb. And when we did actually get steaks they were from Murray's! Holla if you Remember Murray's Boxed Meats...!

I remember Murray's! I was completely impoverished in the 80's (back when they had the generic food in the black and white boxes - they'd be all white with 'canned peas' in black letters. Remember them?), and pretty much only ate peanut butter sandwiches and generic boxed mac and cheese. I had some extra cash and discovered Murray's - thought I had hit the friggen lotto!
