That's when Snyder said he would change the team name. Money talks, even a rich bastard's bullshit walks.

So yeah that's what I told her last night about money talks. It might turn out that they'll (revenue side) force his hand and obviously that's how the market works.
I don't have the energy to put into arguing about it and even if I did, I wouldn't. Haven't been a fan in a couple of years. Cheerleadergate pissed me off and that was it. But FTR I'm not in favor of changing the name of a sports franchise that offends 12 unemployed activists suffering from terminal white guilt. Yes that was a parting shot.

I don't know that it matters. The time to do the right thing was decades ago when Cook still owned the team. And John is right - Snyder is only doing it for financial reasons, not because the name is offensive. I guess he hopes that he might actually sell a ticket and get the few fans left to buy some new merchandise.
Contrast that with Abe Pollin. In the 80's when DC was going through an all-time record for gun violence, he said that his basketball team should no longer be called the Bullets - it could be taken as glorifying violence, and even if only some people believed it, it was some people too many. So he renamed the franchise. It wasn't popular at the time, but it was the right thing to do. And when DC said they had no money to build him a new stadium downtown, he coughed up the cash himself, because he needed a new one, and wanted it downtown. That's an example of how you do things.
(Although I do miss the old Cap Centre. It was a fun place to watch a game, and the seats were affordable. I also miss Memorial Stadium. It was a dump, but the bleacher seats were cheap, and it was hysterical to watch games from them)

I disagreed with Abe's decision and still do, but I understand it. I used to go to Cap Centre to see Bullets and Caps games but I haven't seen or watched the Wizards since the name change save for a game here and there over the years.
We can go back and forth about it being the right thing to do (in all cases). I happen to believe the right thing is to do what you think is right and let the chips fall where they may, like Abe did. But I just can't get on board with the cleansing of all things in the name of political correctness and all things that offend. I think Star Trek Next Generation addressed that or something very similar in one episode. Engage.

Sounds like the name is going down today.
So what should it be replaced with? Knowing Danny,it will go to the highest bidder.
Or since the team is completely in the septic tank, having long ago been flushed down the toilet, why not re-affirm that?
The Washington Trumps Slogan - So. Much. Winning.

The day they lose me as a fan permanently. How about the Washington Rainbows or Fuzzies?
Still waiting on them to go after the Packers.
I strongly believe this over exertion of political correctness will bring us 4 more years of Trump.

I have to laugh - I just read that some dude ran out and trademarked a ton of names earlier this month that could have been possible replacements. Bet Danny-Boy is crapping his pants at the thought of having to spend even more money.
And I don't see it as political correctness. The name was and always has been a slur. The original fight song referred to scalping their opponents. I don't care how people want to spin it - the team name was to imply that they were blood-thirsty redskins, not noble Indian chiefs. The name should have been retired long, long ago. Just like the statues of confederates whose sole purpose was to remind Blacks to remember their place.
For decades upon decades, both Blacks and Native Americans have been told to be patient and crap like this will change. And year after year, they've been told that too many people feel that we can't do anything because of 'history' or 'tradition'. How long exactly should people wait?
In the case of the Redskins, they have had numerous opportunities to re-brand the franchise and come out looking like a hero. They chose to ignore them, and now are paying the price. I have zero pity for them.

Even if everything you said was true (which is thoroughly debatable)..... And? BFD. Does literally everyone that has ever been slighted, stereotyped, bullied, shortchanged, or panties made to ruffle entitled to the righting of every wrong? Or should we at try to allow people to be who and what they are without flipping the world upside down to compensate them for their grievances? Maybe focus on the raging rivers more because these little springs have long dried up and it's literally some white guilt burdened motherfucker with nothing else to do that plowed through the crowds of otherwise happy and well adjusted people to champion these idiotic movements of YES political correctness. That is EXACTLY what it is, but you and I have to agree to disagree from time to time. This apparently is one of those times.
I will say this with 100% conviction- Ownership has the right to call the team whatever they want, just as the advertisers have the right to pull their sponsorships. Just as fans will decide to come to games, buy the merch, or boycott those advertisers.... As Bob sayd, money talks. The market will decide this and all future matters of names, images, physical acts like tomohawk chopping, war chanting, half naked young women "performing" on the sidelines, and pretty much every commercial endeavor be it sport, industry, life that is somehow connected to the almighty dollar.

I realize we will probably always disagree on this, but why does it seem like the people who complain the most often and the loudest about these changes are mostly white? It's almost like whites have been imposing their norms and values over all other majority groups for eons and expect the status quo to stay the same forever.....
And I do agree with you that the owners of the team have the right to name it anything they wish. And advertisers, fans and local governments can decide if they want to support that team name or not. And in the case of the team formerly known as the Redskins, the market has spoken.

George Preston Marshall, the original owner of the Skins, was a true racist. So much so that he resisted bringing in a black player until he was forced.
The only reason Snyder is doing it now is because of pressure from sponsors and possibly the NFL. Mostly sponsors, though. Money does the talking in his case.
And NBC Sports is reporting that the delay in announcing the new name/logo is due to a copyright issue.
