Be forewarned. www.mlb.com/news/dj-lemahieu-home-run-48-mph-pitchNo, this is not an unwritten rule. It's about the Golden One. It's about sportsmanship. But the guy was laughing it off, right? Right. He was laughing it off because it's funny, not because it was some fantastic feat of athleticism that defied the laws of physics. I didn't find it funny. When the score of a baseball game has reached an insurmountable lead by one team, the team in the lead doesn't green light batters to swing at what amounts to batting practice pitches...... in Little League. 48mph is what average 12 year old pitchers throw. Some, like the ones you see in the LLWS, throw considerably harder, closer to an average of 65-75mph. So this bag of soggy dicks in a Skankees uniform can go eat himself for being a stupid jock like the one that every high school has, that makes a tackle 30 seconds after the whistle "in the heat of the moment". FUCK his incentives. PS- Anyone that wants to put money on it, because trust me it ain't braggin... I'm 55 years old, almost as round as I am tall, have almost no disc in L5-S1 and several other spinal issues, a blown up shoulder, knee, and ankle, my vision ain't what it used to be, and......... I PROMISE YOU I can hit a 48mph meatball 340 feet. But I wouldn't do it against a 12 year old. Prick.

Oh and I'm not done yet. As a coach, my teams took our fair share of ass whoopins, and gave out a few too. I would literally have kids swing at pitches that were 6 feet off the plate so they would strike out and not inflict any more points, and frustration on the other team and their fans, when the game was already well in hand. We had a Mercy Rule but it was only after 5 complete innings (10 run lead after 5 IIRC). Some games got away lonnnnnnnnng before that and there's nothing, not a single thing to be gained by "walking the bases" and letting the big hitters swing for the fence.
That's what coaches like me were teaching kids. It all goes to shit when they see this turd in one of the oldest most recognizable uniform in baseball do this. Kind of like Bryce and his tantrums. Bad for baseball but bad for pro sports in general.
Rant over. Probably.

I feel so sorry for that pitcher. What a way to make your rookie debut.
At the same time, should Lemahieu not have swung, or significantly pulled his swing? That to me is a hard one, because at the major league level you're expecting players like Lemahieu to hammer something like that out of the field. So if he didn't, that would have caused other issues too with people saying that the rookie wasn't treated fairly - he shouldn't be treated like a 'baby' after all.
My question is what that poor, poor pitcher was doing up there in the first place? Why would you call up a guy who's fast ball is that slow? It's setting him up for total failure.

Rookie INFIELDER.
When games get out of hand, a manager will often put a position player on the mound to save what's left of his bullpen.

OMG!!! AN INFIELDER???
That poor man! How awful and humiliating for him.
So there were still pitchers in the bullpen and the coach chose not to use them? That's where the shame lies IMO.

Actually, I have seen teams exhaust it's bullpen (used them all) and go to a position player/s to pitch several times. Have also seen the scenario you mentioned, where they try to "save" their bullpen, which is done for several reasons but the main one is so they have "fresh arms" in the game tomorrow, which is also fairly common.
Very rarely, I think the only time I've seen it, and it's under a little different circumstances, was deep in the playoffs/world series, where they'd go to a starter on "short days rest" and move the probables a day back.. It can be as few as 1 day but that's a very short list. During the regular season it's just not done (go to a starter).
The kid may or may not have known. A lot of times it's done by no-u committee which is a hoot to watch them all point fingers at each other saying, 'no YOU!'
