Friend's BIL was doing some work in the backyard a few months ago.
Tripped on something, hit his head and fell into their pool. He was in there a few minutes before his wife noticed the quiet and went outside to check on him.
Prognosis - traumatic brain injury, paralysis from neck down. He's been in the hospital since, and was finally taken off a ventilator two weeks ago. Currently in PT to get him strong enough to sit in a wheelchair.
Obliviously devastating, but this is the easy part - the fun stuff will be when the bills start arriving.
She (friend) has set up a gofundme, and the SIL has set up a special venmo account for those who don't like that gofundme charges the recipients a processing fee to get the money.
People have been generous so far - they're at about half of their initial goal of $15,000 to help with medical expenses and to pay the mortgage.
But it's the responses she's gotten that really piss me off
She posted a link to the gofundme and said that she felt bad for begging like this but 'Joe' and his wife were really going to be struggling financially because of this.
So many responses saying "Oh honey, it's not begging - we know that 'Joe and Jill' really need the money
Or "They've worked hard and need help -this isn't begging"
I don't want to upset my friend - they all have a hard enough road to walk as it is.
But I want to scream. Of course it's begging! It's totally begging, and it's shameful that in a country as rich as ours that people have to beg and hope their story is sad or inspiring enough to convince others to chip in and give them a little help!
Drives me up a fucking tree how accepting people are of these fucking gofundme accounts - maybe we should all do something useful with our time - call for decent healthcare that's accessible to all of our fellow Americans, along with easy to access short term assistance with food and expenses while you wait for permanent disability to come through. Stuff that would truly make the country great.
But let's focus on being able to choose whatever doctor our employer's health coverage limits us to, cause that clearly works.
