I am not at all shocked by this. So many stories about the unprecedented amount of time this was done in, along with Trump's misinformation campaign and threats to fire the head of the FDA if he didn't hurry up and approve the vaccine are not things to create trust.
And I do understand the feeling of many health care workers that they have already sacrificed and don't want to be guinea pigs for this.
At this point, I'm waiting for Moderna to get final approval. Hopefully then both companies will agree to break the double-blind part of the study and tell the participants if they received the vaccine or the placebo. Then hopefully, they will all be willing to go on camera and talk about their experience in receiving the actual vaccine - that hopefully will boost confidence in both of them.
And I am very sorry about your dad - hoping he stays asymptomatic.

I hope they don’t break the double blind! There are still many things to be learned. Emergency approval is not final. Many drugs that have received emergency approval in the past have had it rescinded, some even this year.

On the one hand, I say don't break it, but on the other I feel that these people were willing to take an enormous risk for the rest of us, so those who did get the placebo should be offered the chance to get the real thing if they wish to. There's going to be more than enough idiots who refuse the vaccine on their own to not give those with the placebo the real thing.
Friend of mine in TN just got her dose this morning as she came off shift. Said it was no worse than getting any other vaccine. She'll report back on side effects.

I feel like it's a moral obligation to offer it to the placebo group. In fact, I would put them at the top of the list to honor their sacrifice.

Agreed. And there have been trial where they have broken the blind early because the folks getting the actual medication saw such drastic improvement that the researchers didn't feel they could ethically deny that to the control group.
