It does appear that the risk to kids is pretty low, but there's no real evidence because heaven forbid we do actual contact tracing or even do more frequent testing in schools so that we have real evidence on whether the virus is a threat there or not. I do believe that all along the highest risk was to teachers and staff more than their students, but that's just my personal opinion and not based on any science.
One thing that is a proven fact is that viruses of any type spread faster when people are indoors, space is tight and ventilation is not adequate. Pretty much the definition of 70% of American Schools. However, schools in other countries have opened without negative consequences. Would be quite nice if we were told what they are doing so that people here can be assured that it's safe.
One thing that has been proven however, is that the mental health of kids has sharply declined since schools have been closed and things have been isolated. Lots of kids killing or harming themselves, and lots of kids suffering from extreme anxiety and depression. While reopening schools may help with that, it's not the cure that many parents are thinking it will be.
