What was interesting to me was this:
According to a copy of survey results obtained by The Washington Post, when the police who patrolled Little Earth were asked whether they thought adults in the community make sure children are safe, 25.9 percent said yes; 82 percent of residents said yes. Seventy-three percent of community members said they thought residents were actively working to improve the safety of their neighborhood; 33 percent of officers agreed. More than 94 percent of officers said Little Earth residents should be concerned about being robbed or assaulted when outside their homes, compared with 49 percent of residents who thought the same.
Two-thirds of officers said they had not been to Little Earth for any reason besides responding a crime report in the previous two months, and the survey found that attitudes about the dangers in the community softened among officers who had visited for other reasons.
It just reinforces what we pretty much already know - the people who live in places with high rates of crime care, and they want (and are trying) to do better, but it's hard to get traction when the only 'official' help you can try to get already has it pounded into them that you're nothing but vicious thugs.
At the same time, I don't see things changing - so much easier to label areas as dangerous, and people as thugs than to actually do something to improve lives there.
My Whittless congressman just sent me an email that summed it up. The infrastructure bill that the Biden administration proposed? It's not all going to rebuild bridges! It's going to things like Medicaid expansion, childcare subsidies, schools and R&D for solutions to climate change. That's not infrastructure!!!
But never fear, Whitman is here! He'll make sure that money goes to roads and not to help people. Because he, like his fellow Republicans have their priorities straight.
It would be great if we made some infrastructure improvements in places like Little Earth. Things like street lights, a community clinic and community center with some programs for everyone to use. And a better police presence - regular patrols where officers got out of their cars and walked around so they could get to know the area better, and resources behind those officers so that when they saw someone who needed help, they could get it for them before that problem escalated to the level of a crime. Wouldn't happen overnight, but man oh man, it would be nice if we could at least get it started. And part of getting it started would be for the police to trust some of these community leaders and walk around with them.
