I typed out that nice long response on the options thread that John may or may not have read (I hold out no hope for Bob, and Pam is huddled next to a fan dreaming of ice cubes
But in terms of changing police, when I thought about it, it really does start with guns.
Our country has way, way too many guns out on the street (legally and illegally), with no control over them.
I don't want guns banned, nor do I want certain types of guns banned.
And I do feel that if you feel more comfortable owning or carrying a gun, then you should be able to.
But we need to find a way to control what is out there, or at least control the new stuff entering the pipeline.
So, my questions:
1) What is the purpose of concealed carry, other than to be able to stow a weapon out of sight in a vehicle while you are not in it (say in a glove box)?
--If you have a gun, and are not part of law enforcement, why not just carry it? Wouldn't it be easier to grab/use it if it was in the open and not concealed in a coat, backpack or purse?
2) Why do we not register guns? Wouldn't that make it easier to trace a gun used in a crime?
--Where in the constitution does it say that the government can't know that you own a gun?
3) Why not require training/licensing before purchasing a firearm?
--Yes I know it's your right to own a gun, but where does that right end?
---Convicted felons are barred from owning a gun, so why can't we say that folks like me who can't hit the broadside of a barn should also be barred?
4) Should gun safety be taught in schools?
--Doesn't have to be by a teacher, but shouldn't we have some sort of universal training?
---I'm thinking stuff like knowing the difference between a toy weapon and a real one (since some of those toys are damned realistic now a days, and some of the real ones look like toys), what to do if you find a gun laying around unattended, not to point any type of weapon at another person, and as kids get older, the basic gun laws of the state they live in.
---Bonus points if the kids can be taken to a range and allowed to shoot an actual gun, rifle and shotgun. Much like sex ed, I don't think that one or two shots at a target range is going to convert a kid into a gun-toting member of the NRA instantly.
Have absolutely no idea what to do about the shit currently on the street. And while these are the 4 items I personally would like to tackle first, I don't see where any single one of them would be enacted - people are too set in their positions.
