Friend's husband is in ICU.
About 4 years ago, they found a brain tumor. Luckily it was benign, but when they removed it, he did have the second major complication (first was death - it was a risky surgery), which was a brain bleed.
That has caused seizures, and additional surgeries to relieve pressure on his brain. He lost 94% of his vision, and still had seizures.
His wife got the virus (luckily not a severe enough case to go to the hospital, but bad enough), and as a precaution, he and one of his sons stayed in a hotel room while his wife (my friend) isolated at home.
When the vaccine came out, he was one of those folks who were on the 'line' - eligible to get vaccinated, but with enough severe medical conditions that no one knew what might happen.
Wife has very strong antibodies to the virus right now - doctor said that while CDC was recommending everyone get vaccinated, they also said that it was a choice if you had antibodies, so she decided to wait, as her husband was very insistent on getting vaccinated (she wanted to be there to help him with side-effects, and she's the breadwinner now and couldn't afford more time off of work).
Unfortunately, he had major side-effects and since his second shot has been so weak that walking and keeping his balance has been difficult. Late last week, he had a grand-mal seizure that lasted over 10 minutes (he was still seizing when the EMTs arrived).
He's in ICU at MWH. Was intubated in an induced coma. They've removed the breathing tube, but he is not waking up from the sedation. He does have some limited response to pain, and if you squeeze his hand, his facial expression appears to change slightly, so there definitely is hope.
His wife told me the most frustrating part of this is trying to convince the doctors that the vaccination may have played a role in this. She's not anti-vax, but feels that if this was a result of being vaccinated, it should be reported. And she also wants them to consult with places that may have more information about side-effects to see if something can be done to help her husband.
He's just turning 50 this year. Just a heartbreaking thing. Hoping he recovers, and regains at least the function he had before this. And hoping that the doctors get their heads out of their asses and consult with others too.
