The federal moratorium on evictions ends today, without a peep from congress.
I was talking to the landlady the other day and mentioned the moratorium being lifted, and the impending shitshow that promises to follow in short order. She said she didn't know how much it would matter because property owners were throwing people out anyway. She suggested that a lot of people thought they were going to live rent free during the pandemic and not have to settle that debt, so they used their stimulus for everything but rent.
So what happens when the well dries up, and there's no more stimulus, no more SNAP, no more utility help, no more unemployment? Will some of these jobs start to get filled or will it be too late?

I agree on the shit show. What's truly sad is that billions were put aside for rental assistance, and from what I've read, most of it hasn't been used ('claimed' is the term being tossed around) I honestly don't even know how to go about applying for that program, let alone what documentation I'd need. And being that it's a government program, I'd imagine it requires a lot of paperwork. Sad for tenants, and sad for small landlords. From what I read, landlords couldn't apply on behalf of a tenant so basically everyone gets screwed in the end. And I agree that a lot of people thought moratorium = forgiveness. And by the time they realized they weren't the same, they were so over their heads that I suspect a lot of them just gave up on any hope of paying the landlord back and spend that stimulus on other things. There's really no upside here. I suspect those jobs will still go unfilled too. Employers don't want to hire anyone without a fixed address, so those losing their place will have no where to stake a claim
