Y'all know I don't care about footbaw, but FFS, Commanders? That's a pretty sucky name, IMO.
Well then, GO COMMIES!

I agree. Horrible name. As I was drifting off to sleep this morning shortly after the announcement, I was overcome by sadness. All the memories! And I loved the fight song, the cheerleaders in their buckskin, etc. It was another era.

Back in the day the band actually marched during halftime.
Chief Zee.
The stands flexing up and down as the fans were shouting "We want Dallas!"
The Redskins brought black and white people together in the stadium, on the job, on the streets, wherever you went. And for some reason never even gave a thought that they were harming someone else in supporting the team, the name, the mascots, and truth is- they weren't. It was a good thing and a good time and Snyder can eat a bag of dicks for caving on the name and thsi was the best they could come up with to boot?
Washrags.

I'll always remember Debbers and her love of the hogs. I got her a 'Pig Hat' and had it autographed for her (She insisted on calling it a Hog Helmet for some reason....)
And Redskins and the imagery was never complementary to Native Americans. Neither were the Braves or the Indians. All the teams and owners gave lip service to 'helping' or 'honoring' tribes, but all they really cared about was the bloody imagery and tired stereotypes of Indians massacring their opponents.
If something brings two races together, does that excuse the thing from being racist towards other groups? For example, would anyone have thought the Washington Slant-Eyes be acceptable? The Cleveland Polacks?
Racism is racism. Now, mind you I support Danny's right to be a racist 100%. He can name the damn team anything he wants, as long as the league says it's acceptable. And if the league says it's unacceptable, I'd support his right to pull his team from the NFL and start his own league.
At the same time, it's the right of any corporates sponsors to declare the name (or the utterances of the owner) unacceptable and say they're pulling their sponsorship as a result.
This was never a matter of principle for Snyder (or anyone else directly involved with the team, including FedEx), but a matter of cash.
It will pay off big time for Danny Boy though, since DC, MD and VA are all about to start a bidding war to get his crap-ass team a new stadium. Bet that would never have happened if he hadn't changed the name....

I hope Maryland wins because screw that. Jack Kent Cooke bought his own stadium.

Abe Pollin did as well - twice (Cap Centre in PG, and the phone booth downtown).
At the same time, I 100% blame the states and cities for these debacles. Why would I shell out my own cash to buy land and build if the state is willing to do it for me? And what kind of jackass would turn that money down when EVERY team owner is getting it?
As taxpayers, we need to tell our elected officials that we're not gonna take it. Of course we never will.

Actually we did. I am somewhat proud to say that I was right out in front of the noise machine when they wanted to build the baseball stadium in spotsy. It was planned for the lot next to Carmax!! and they were going to essentially hand over the property, cash, and not tax the team for any of it. Oh hell no. And I/we kicked their freeloading asses out of spotsylvania and threatened a harsh campaign against those on the bos that supported it.
And sorry but I still disagree with yall on the name/s of these teams. I'll wait while you show me one derogatory theme the Washington Redskins put out that was intended to be offensive to native americans. I mean, why would a professional sports franchise want to mock or belittle a group of people> It doesn't make any sense. But I digress, I'm kind of tired of this topic and my shovel is ready for another scoop of dirt.

Are you sure the horse is actually dead? We may need to beat it some more And I'm glad that you led the charge against building the bb stadium. Haven't been to the one in F'burg. Friends say it's very nice, but still expensive as hell for a low-A team.

I wanted to get into the fight with kalhari too but that one kind of imploded under it's own weight.
The team that wanted to build in spotsy was the hagerstown suns and their ownership wanted a free ride. The team that built over in central park (another shit show for location) was the team from Potomac (woodbridge) and their ownership apparently worked with the city on something that was at leats as equitable to the city as it was the team. We were already on the way out when they started that process. Plus I wasn't living in spotsy or fxb when it went up.

Yeah, the Cannons relocated down here. They did make people buy 5 year season ticket packages in advance to show the city that there was enough interest to warrant bringing the team here, so that was a plus.
And that whole Kalhari shit show was beyond ridiculous. Like that was ever a good idea....

The baseball thing worked out okay. I wanted a team, but not with a huge local tax investment. The timing couldn't have been worse though, what with pandemic and all.

The original owner of the team, George Preston Marshall, was the epitome of a racist. He resisted hiring any people of color until he was forced to, in 1962.
