I have a super hard time rooting for a league where men who are repeatedly accused of sexual and domestic violence get a slap on the wrist because they're a great passer/receiver/tackle/fill in the blank.
DeShaun Watson being the latest example - yeah all of this was off-field behavior, but at what point do you say that the off-season behavior overrides whatever athletic talent you bring to the table?
The Texans settled 23 of 25 sexual assault and harassment claims against him, but I guess that's not enough to say that perhaps he should be banned from the league.
Meanwhile, Kap takes a knee, harming no one, and can't get a job to save his life. Go figure.

It's not just the NFL, it's literally every big money enterprise at this point. But I really could not care less as I left all my fucks at the will-call at Fedex Field. Been there waiting on me for years.

Oh yeah almost forgot. Sports betting. Now that all the major sports leagues are being sponsored bigly by sports betting, I have more than enough disillusionment to last me a lifetime with pro sports. And that was before the nats had their fire sale last year and sold their most prized player today.

Yeah - I can't see where sports betting is going to be anything but bad. Here are the odds that Brady will miss his first pass of the game! How many minutes until the first sack? And we all know that team owners aren't going to put the pressure on coaches and players to make those plays happen to keep the bettors happy.
And you are right - it almost all big-league sports. Just seems like the NFL is the worst at doing anything (or pretending to) about it.
As for Juan, I thought that $440 mil was a pretty handsome offer. Would have made him the highest paid player in the sport. When he turned it down, they really had no option but to move him while they still could get something in return for the remainder of his contract. And he didn't sound too unhappy to be leaving. What gets me is that one of the Padres coming our way (Hosmer) had a no-trade clause in his contract that the team asked him to waive. My understanding is that most players ask for that in return for taking a salary discount - they have the security of knowing they'll be staying in one place for the duration of the contract. Why sign one when you know they're going to ask you to waive it if they decide you're expendable?
Ah well....

It would've been the largest contract ever signed (I think in any sport but I could be wrong) but when broken down by year, was under 29m a year where several other players are making well over 30m (Trout, Machado...), meaning he would be like the 4th or 5th in terms of yearly salary. As I've said before, this world is backwards af when a guy that is really good at baseball makes more money than God, and of course, the scientists trying to cure diseases and turns down an offer like that.

Ah, thanks John. Didn't realize what the entire breakdown was.
I read an opinion column about Soto's agent, who is a pretty greedy bastard (but as an agent, I guess he's supposed to be - you don't want to sign with someone who's going to give the team the farm on your behalf). Anyway, I thought the writer had a good idea - make the $440 mil offer and then when it's rejected say "Oh man, we thought that was the best! We need Juan to stay - give us the dollar amount it's going to take to do this." Then if the amount is what you consider unreasonable, make it public - well we offered $440 mil, but Soto's agent said not a dime under $600 mil, and well we just aren't going to pay that much for one player.
And if the player ends up signing for $500 mil elsewhere, the Nats could then come out and say "Well, his agent said not a dime below $600mil - clearly he lied to us"
I honestly thought Soto was a free agent after this year, so yeah, this is dirty pool by the Lerners - one would think they'd leave him in place to get the most money as they sell the team.

Scott Boras is the most powerful agent in baseball and his client list including basically all of the superstars in the sport. It was said that the organization leaked the 440m contract offer that was rejected but I highly suspect it was Boras. But whatever, he didn't become who he is by settling.
The organization could have had their cake and eaten it too by making him the top paid, in terms of yearly bazillions of dollars, with the same dollar figure and a shorter term of the contract. They could have put in really sweet incentives to far exceed the league's top players as long as Soto exceeded the performance of the league's top players. How many players actually live out their contracts that say 12 instead of 14 years would mean a damn thing in terms of keeping that player through the entire contract?

Hell, I'd set a cap of 10yrs, with a guaranteed no trade for the first 4 if benchmarks are met each season.
So, tons o bucks, security and if things suck for him, a shorter out time to leave.
Damn John, we should be agents!

Are you familiar with the Bobby Bonilla Day at Met's Stadium?
Bonilla's agent, Dennis Gilbert, orchestrated a contract payout for the third baseman that will pay him $1.2 million every year from 2011 until 2035. Bonilla was originally owed $5.9 million from the Mets in 2000, but the new deal pays him over $1 million annually, plus an additional 8% interest, according to ESPN
