There was a story today in the WaPo about a lost dog in Texas. She spent a year at a shelter before being adopted. One of the reasons was because she is an escape artist. A previous adopter returned her because she broke out of her crate and destroyed a piece of art. A few weeks after her final adoption, guess what? Yep, she escaped while her human was fitting her for a new harness. He went after on foot, then by car. He notified the shelter and they elicited an APB to all shelters and their facebook followers. There were a few sightings, but she was gone when they arrived at the locations. One night, as the shelter director was drifting off to sleep, she received a notification from the shelter’s ring doorbell. It was late, so she ignored it, figuring it was a prankster. Again, her phone beeped with a ring notification. Again, she ignored it. Then, a voice emanated from her phone, saying someone was at the door. She picked up her phone and opened the video feed and lo and behold it was Bailey, the lost dog! The director activated the mic and spoke to her and she immediately perked her head up. So she and her daughter rushed to the shelter; daughter drove while she continued to speak to Bailey. Bailey was ecstatic on their arrival. They opened the door and she ran back to the kennels. She was fed and bedded down for the night. They notified the adopter in the morning. The director cautioned him to be more careful with her. She traveled 10 miles.
Needless to say, this story caused a huge amount of tears. This is exactly my dream - that I would find one of my pups at my door one day. I miss them so. But most were sent far far away - Connecticut, NC. The two closest ones went to MD, one to Southern Maryland. So it’s feasible that she could have come home. Unfortunately, she was aged so I doubt that she could have made it if she tried.
So I remain lost. Now I need to go blow my nose and dry my eyes. (Yes, I bawled while retelling this story.)
