First Black player in the NHL.
I'm reading his autobiography, and let me tell you this guy is a total badass.
Played several sports, and was good enough to get a contract with a minor league baseball team playing shortstop/second base when he was 20. He ended up playing left wing for the Boston Bruins back in the days where full-out brawls were the order of the day so he learned quickly to dish it out as well as take it.
And he did this all while concealing that he was completely blind in his right eye! Took a slapshot directly to the face when he was 19 and lost his vision. Doctor agreed to keep it quiet, and he only told one of his sisters because he knew his sports career would be over if anyone knew. So for a 20+ year career, he hid that he was partially blind.
Can you see a pro athlete doing that today? I have mad admiration for him.
