So how does the transition to commercials from the program work? Is there someone sitting at the controls to make the switch? I always figured it was automated. But I’m watching SVU on USA and at every commercial break, a few seconds of the next segment of the show is shown before clumsily switching to commercials. I’ve seen this on several shows and channels, including REELZ/OnPatrol. Surely they’ve automated this by now?

I don't know but it seems to be a regular thing on a lot of streaming services. It's a bit disconcerting at times.

It's called a residual director. And it involves someone who tells the folks in the studio when to drop the network feed and go to commercial, ect.

Yes but that's when there's a studio. There's no such thing wrt to Hulu, Netflix etc. The content is on demand which is an entirely different ballgame.
