This time with my psychiatrist.
He has always hand-written his office/treatment notes and sent them to BC/BS as backup for various treatment plans. Never an issue.
In December, they started rejecting his claims. Why? Oh no one could read his handwritten notes, despite the fact that it wasn't an issue in November it seems. And they did this with zero warning or notice.
Plus they didn't tell him they were doing this until mid-January. So over a month and a half of no payments - the rejections they were receiving said to re-submit treatment notes with nothing about the format of said notes.
He told me when I went for my last visit in April that they had to go back and transcribe all of his notes into the computer - years of notes, cause they wanted to be 100% sure. Then they had to re-submit every claim. At that point he hadn't been paid for anything past last November - they had to let the lease go on their office and move to a smaller place, and also lay off part of the staff. BC/BS patients represent close to 40% of his caseload.
In June, they finally started paying - TWO months after I was last in. And my visit was recorded in the computer, so would have met their requirements.
Needless to say, he's totally pissed and he told me today that he had (and I quote) no fucking trust that they wouldn't do something else to screw him over. As an aside, I've been seeing him long enough that cursing is allowed on both sides - he doesn't swear at other patients!
So now I'm worried that when his current contract ends that he may not sign a new one. Which means I'd be in the market for a new doctor.
And I am fucking pissed too. Goddamned insurance companies - remind me again how we have the greatest healthcare system in the world?
