“Good Lord, Who Among Us Hasn’t Paid For A Clarence Thomas Vacation?” David Kurtz of Talking Points Memo asked this morning. Kurtz was reacting to a new piece by Brett Murphy and Alex Mierjeski in ProPublica detailing Justice Thomas’s leisure activities and the benefactors who underwrote them.
Those activities include “t least 38 destination vacations, including a previously unreported voyage on a yacht around the Bahamas; 26 private jet flights, plus an additional eight by helicopter; a dozen VIP passes to professional and college sporting events, typically perched in the skybox; two stays at luxury resorts in Florida and Jamaica; and one standing invitation to an uber-exclusive golf club overlooking the Atlantic coast.” The authors add that this “is almost certainly an undercount.”
The mere fact that this man isn't under investigation for tax fraud and conflict of interest, let alone still on the court is a total joke.
Maybe what's needed are concrete links to those gifts and his vote on cases that came before the court that involved the folks behind the gifts in any way.
Just taking an insane example
Deidre gave Thomas a Rolex.
Deidre has heavy investments in a company that will heavily benefit from a case before the court.
The court ruled against the company, but Thomas was one of the dissenters.
John gave Thomas nothing.
Pam paid for the Thomas family's vacation to Aruba
John asked Pam's bakery to make a cake for his gay son's wedding and she refused.
Thomas voted in favor of the bakery.
Even then, I don't know that it would sway Republicans - they need that seat and heaven forbid a moderate gets it.
