Worked the food pantry last Saturday. For the first time since I've started volunteering there, we ran out of cold food completely. No frozen meats whatsoever. We were giving people their box of canned/shelf stable foods, a lunchable for each family member and a quart of shelf-stable milk. We did find a pack of chocolate peanut butter rice krispy treats, so we were adding one of those per family member. By the end of the day, we were running out of lunchables, so only a quart of milk. Food bank doesn't have enough to fill our orders. I felt terrible - you have a family of 5 and we're giving you some canned veggies, a pound of rice, a pound of pasta, and three cans of spaghetti sauce. Oh, and 4 cans of tuna. Then we add one quart of milk and a few lunchables. Yep, you'll be eating high on the hog this week. Infuriating and embarassing. We did have several homeless folks come in last week, which is very unusual. Even though we were short on food, I gave them extra lunchables and krispy treats - when you're living in a tent in the woods, I figure every little bit might help. And I want to beat the living crap out of every politician who is fine with this situation.
