pirg.org/edfund/media-center/report-stranded-shows-how-new-colorado-wheelchair-right-repair-law-essential/Here's one that should be a federal law - the right to repair your own equipment if you are disabled, or the right for others to have access to the parts and training to do it for you. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Stayed at an Airbnb in Colorado that was run by a disabled woman. Aside from the airbnb (that was super nice), she repaired and refurbished motorized chairs as her living. She bought them up at different places because users couldn't wait for repairs and had purchased new chairs, or the user of the chair had passed. She then made any necessary repairs and renovations (things like new seats, armrests, footplates) and resold them at a huge discount from new chairs. She had two guys who worked for her doing the repairs themselves, and she did all the research to find chairs and get all the needed parts, and she also did the marketing to sell them. Once one sells, she makes all the arrangements to ship to the new owner. It was really cool - she showed me her garage - one side was full of chairs awaiting repair - half of the other side was the workshop, and the back was where the ready-to-chairs were stored. When we were there there were 4 chairs. Two were waiting to be shipped, and the other two were still for sale. Totally would be a great business for you John.

Absolutely should be a federal statute.
I have never quite understood how all this has become so proprietary and the extreme difficulty it places on all consumers but in this case those that need the "assistive technology" as they call it. Of course the industry is super huge and as long as you have Phillips, J&J, and other giant corporations holding the patents and the regulatory puppet strings quite similar to the banking system in a lot of ways, it will be protected interests for the sake of profits over all else.
No more businesses for me! I'm done!

And there should be another one for the airline industry mandating full replacement cost if they damage any type of assistive equipment that needs to be checked as baggage. Maybe then they'd take a little more care with wheelchairs, scooters and the like.
