A nice feel-good story for your day.
The food bank is pretty sparse on personal care items like shampoo & soap and has been for a while. One thing that we almost never get are toothbrushes, and when we do, they're almost always in multi-packs. Great if you have a family, but sucks if it's just you (because we run out too quickly).
When I was at my dentist for my cleaning last week, it came to mind that dentists get toothbrushes in bulk and therefore they're cheap. And that perhaps they'd give me that discount and order me a bunch of brushes.
So I ask Dr. Shirk if I could do that. His reply "Nope. I'll donate them to you though." I told him that I was looking for at least 200 brushes though. Nope, not a problem.
So his assistant called me this morning. They have a box of toothbrushes and some toothpaste as well for me to pick up.
I am beyond happy! And since they are all individually packaged, they'll go further. Families of 1 can get one brush, while families of 6 can get 6 brushes so everyone can have one.
And I can spend my spare cash on diapers - our 'best-selling' item.

Nice of him to help out!
Daughter picked up a thing of diapers at Costco and asked how much did we pay for diapers back when. Her pack was over 40 bucks.

OMG, it's expensive. I used my donation budget for the pantry on diapers - 4 packs (2- size 5s, a size 4 and a size 3) and two jumbo packs of wipes (total of 16 packs) - $130. That supply may make it a full week - wipes probably will, but diapers will be down to size 3s only if any are left.
And this is with opening the boxes and splitting the interior packages in two to make them go further.

And don't get me started on the price of milk

Just went to Lidl and one bag of produce was 23 bucks. Oops take off 6 for the bomb ass cookie assortment. Should've picked up a couple of pumpkins but I wasn't risking hanging over to reach in that bin and get stuck trying to stand back up. I'm already limping on both feet as it is.
Oh, point- the prices are still + more than 30% on staples and most everything in the store but many costing 2 to 3 times what it did prepandemic.

How about adult diapers? Any need for those? I’ve got some jumbo-sized (tie-died!) that I will gladly donate. Nearly a case.

Pam, I'll ask - they probably would be happy to take them!

Medicaid will send you a big box a week it's almost comical. Assume medicare does the same.
Always worth checking into just in case.

Oh it is! When my friend had to have a shunt put in for a kidney infection, I think she got 2 large boxes of chucks and three large boxes of diapers for the 6 weeks before her surgery.
On the one hand it's good - you go through a lot of that stuff. But on the other hand it is overkill.
It is too bad that Medicaid or WIC do not cover diapers. Even a package a week would help.

I was under the impression WIC did cover them. Was I under the wrong impression?

You were. WIC only covers food - formula, baby food and the like. They do cover things like eggs and milk along with some other foods on the theory that mom needs to have nutritious foods to take care of the baby.
No non-food items. Even then, a lot of people say that they are running out or low on formula by the end of the month.
