I had a $3 and some pennies credit balance on my Directv account. I wasn’t concerned. Today, I received a prepaid Mastercard with that amount! Holy shit! It must have cost them more than that to punch the card and mail it to me! A check 9or crediting my wireless account with it) would have been much cheaper and easier.

Yes, but what are the odds that you use that card? Card probably cost $1 to process, but if you never use it, they make a $2 profit.
And if they credited your bill, they'd make no profit! That's what companies who issue gift cards count on.

Troof.
I'd take their card and use every last penny. Almost all payment terminals will accept multiple forms of payment, and I've used those cards in conjunction with both cash and debit purchases without any issues. The real peeve of mine is store specific cards, which are such a scam and people don't even realize the gift they are giving is to the retailer.

Evidently there’s an option to transfer the balance to a bank. I think that’s what I’m going to do. I do that all the time with the “Apple Cash” I get from my Apple Card.
