Approximately 20 million AR-15s have been sold in the US since the assault rifle ban was lifted.
Don't have figures for other guns, but that's a large genie to get back into a bottle.
So rather than talk about 'sensible gun control', maybe the talk should shift to how to prevent those 20 million guns from being used outside of a target range.

You know me..... but what I always need to make clear is that I think they ought to be banned for sale or ownership except under a very select set of qualification requirements.
20 million of anything is a problem but yeah that's tough to wrap my head around. Just in the US?

Just in the US. Overwhelming to think about.
I do think that something should be in place to prevent or at least slow the sale of them, but we all know that the NRA and gun manufactures will put a kibosh on that immediately.
We all expect the 'good cops' to stand up and take out their own trash. So why aren't we putting the same pressure on the 'responsible gun owners' to call out those who stockpile this shit so they can 'defend themselves against the government'? And shouldn't they all be screaming for some sorts of controls on this shit too?
Cause just like the good cops, they're being lumped in with the irresponsible gun owners.
Instead of the same tired shit about guns not killing people, maybe acknowledge that if these guys didn't have ready access to a gun with a large magazine where you can pull the trigger over and over again quickly to produce massive damage, lobby harder for expanded mental health services, along with subsidies to help people get the education to go into these fields to make sure there's enough providers to help.
Stop explaining over and over that these are not 'assault rifles' and acknowledge that they have no place in hunting or self-defense, and lobby for more stringent background checks on them.
Push for background checks on ALL sales, including those from gun shows and private sales. Private sales can take place at a licensed gun dealer who will do the check and note the sale. For gun shows, shouldn't be too hard to have some sort of person certified to do a background check at the door to make sure you're cleared. So if you just want to browse, no need to stop. If you want to buy, gotta get the check first.
Those are the three I would start with, that I'd hope most people can agree on.
